Default I pee in the shower to save water

When I get up in the morning, I choose to pee in the shower instead of the toilet to save water. I'm guessing that while most people don't do this on a regular basis (or at least won't admit to it), most of you have done it at one time or another. I just make it a habit to save water. Am I too cheap?

Let's file this one under TMI. Come on now. Whether people do this or not (and I'm sure plenty do), is this really appropriate conversation for this board?

I think so. There was a national campaign in Brazil to encourage people to pee in the shower: Campaign Ad Urging People To Pee In The Shower Saves Water - YouTube Maybe by discussing it openly people will not feel bad about doing it.

Actually, that's interesting. We were in Bermuda last year. Bermuda has NO source of fresh water on the island. The only fresh water comes from rainfall or gets imported which gets pretty expensive. They are extremely focused on water conservation. I could see them doing the very same thing there.

I'd consider that an act of convenience more than an act of saving. I mean, you are in there anyway, so you might as well go.

It would probably be more of a saving to take a shorter shower or a colder shower than to worry about the water usage from flushing a toilet. Water is by far the cheapest utility. Saving electricity or gas to heat the water will get you further on utility savings.

I'd say it's even better. I would do it, but I don't think the neighbors would appreciate it too much.

I had the same thought. Doing this is more about conserving water than about saving money.

Our water bill runs under $1.50/day. That's for 3 people showering, flushing toilets, washing hands, washing dishes, doing laundry, etc. If we each flushed the toilet one less time per day, the savings would be so small as to almost be incalculable. Even projected out over the course of a year, you're talking about no more than a few dollars.

The situation was the same for me at my old house. Water was a set rate per 1000 gallons of usage. The bill would not change until you got to the next 1000 gallons (1001 gallons or more per month.) The bill was the same whether you used 1 gallon of 999 gallons. I used around 500 gallons a month when I lived alone, so not flushing the toilet, even everyday (at around 1 gallon a flush) wouldn't save anything, since it never came near going over 1000 gallons anyway. This strategy would not add up to any savings at all for me. It would save water, but it would not impact my budget even by one single penny.

A better strategy for saving money would be to do what I stated earlier. Take shorter or colder showers. Saving gas or electricity to heat the water would translate into real savings.

Um, I suppose this depends where you live. Water is by far the most expensive utility bill, for us. Water is more scarce here. Our other utilities are dirt cheap.

I am not saying this to support OP's assertions. But, for some people, conserving water may be far more financially rewarding than saving on gas or electricity.

I paid for water in blocks. It was $5.25 per 1000 gallons. So for me, it was by far my cheapest utility. Not flushing the toilet here and there wouldn't do a thing in my case.

Same here now that I think about it. So not flushing a couple of times per day would make no difference to our bill at all.

I actually don't pay for my water since I have a well. I do, however, pay for the electricity used by my well pump to bring it into the house. I have no idea how much a toilet flush might figure into my electric bill.

I think not. Rest assured the moderators and webmaster are keeping an eye on things. I think the threads so far have been entertaining and spurred some good discussion so no problems at this point.

Convenient but not necessarily a water or money saver. After all, the water will be running those extra seconds.

Now, it definitely IS a time saver and time is money. Lol. Especially those precious morning minutes for those who shower in the morning.

Now I tend to shower in the evenings before bed. I WILL admit to washing my face and brushing my teeth in the shower. Doubt that I save ANY water doing so. But I save time and get to prolong standing under a nice hot relaxing spray while doing so.

That's a good point. I'm sure more than a liter or even a gallon of water you would flush runs out of the shower faucet while you're doing whatever.
