I've been lurking for awhile here and have decided to share some of my saving tips. I will warn everyone in advance that everyone thinks I am way to cheap, but the truth is I really don't care. I save money and it works for me. So I plan to share the strange ways that I save money and if you like them, great. If you don't, that is your prerogative as well.
This is how I save on bananas. I usually buy bananas in bulk when they start to brown and freeze them since I use them mainly for smoothies (you can usually buy them for 80% or more off their regular price like this. I don't make banana bread, but I also hear they are wonderful for that as well). But when there are no bulk deals to be found, what I do is grab a bunch of bananas, peel them in the store, place them all into a plastic bag (since they are going to be frozen anyway) and then take them to the registered peeled. Since bananas are priced per pound, not having the skin on them reduces their price by about 1/3. Am I too cheap? |

No joke. I do this all the time. The check out cashiers usually roll their eyes at me, but it saves me money. I don't think there is anything wrong with it. many people often shuck husks of corn before buying it. I do the same with my bananas.

Do you also bring a knife to cut the core out of cabbage or iceberg lettuce? Peel the oranges? Split open a watermelon and remove the rind and seeds? Take the cores out of apples?, Pit the plums? Snap off the ends of a pound of green beans?
Yes, peeling before paying is going to far. The price per pound is based on the product in the way it is set out for you to buy.

Okay, full disclosure here. Years ago, when my moral compass was a bit off center, I used to snap the stems off the portobello mushroom caps since I only used the caps and I was paying by the pound. Of course, mushrooms cost 10 times as much per pound as bananas ($3.99 vs. $0.39) so I guess I felt more justified doing that. Plus, anyone who wanted to use the stems was still free to buy them. I long ago decided that wasn't really the right thing to do and switched to taking them as they were, stems and all. So I can kind of understand where OP is coming from. Still, peeling fruit in the store just isn't right. It clearly isn't the intent of the store. As noted, corn on the cob is different. Our store even provides large bins next to the corn for those who want to husk it right there. I don't see any such bins by the bananas or oranges or other fruit.
I say buy the bananas as they are with the peels. Peel them at home.

Considering that things are priced differently depending on their form, you are definitely in the wrong.
Broccoli florets cost more per pound that broccoli heads with stems. Celery hearts cost more per pound than the whole celery stalk. Peeled fruit costs more than unpeeled fruit (look at buying a pineapple versus buying fresh pineapple). So if I had ever believed a word you said about anything, this would have sealed the deal that you are lying, because you would not be allowed to do this. But since you are completely making all of this us, I'm not going to lose too much sleep over you throwing away your imaginary banana peels into your imaginary trash can. So why don't you go pulled some half-eaten food out of a trash can somewhere and enjoy yourself. |
