Before making the decision on buying generic vs name brand, definitely look at the value you're getting. Sometimes it may seem like you're getting a great deal, but the product doesn't last as long or work as well as the name brand. As for food, that goes to personal taste.

I haven't tried Costco brands...we have a Cost Co near us, and have been considering joining, but haven't actually decided yet.

My cream cheese I bought the other day tasted better in the cheaper generic version than the regular Philadelphia one that I bought on the same day at a different store to compare. Sometimes, generics do taste better.

I think that's what a lot of people fail to realize. Some folks just assume generic means inferior. It doesn't. Generic can be just as good or even better than the brand equivalent. They aren't all great. Some are pretty lousy. But you don't know until you try. There are products I prefer the brand of. There are products I prefer the generic of. There are products that I really don't have a preference and buy whichever is cheaper. If the brand is on sale or I have a coupon, I buy that. Otherwise, I buy the generic.

30 yrs. ago or so generics were almost always inferior but I've noticed that there is little difference for most things in the last maybe ten years. Not sure if it's just me or if there is a real difference. I'm speaking mainly of grocery items.

I went to Walmart last weekend and saw that the eye contact solutions they were selling were a lot cheaper than the branded ones. It was 10 dollars cheaper in fact...but, I was a bit worried about the quality of it so I decided to buy the branded one..I bought 2 for 14 bucks and the generic brand was 2 for 4 bucks......
