I work out with a personal trainer, who charges $65 an hour... But wait. Hold your frugal fire.
I've teamed up with about 10 other women and we share the cost of that hour.

Our trainer--who specializes in Yoga--gives each of us great personal attention. We have a super class--once a week and it's a lot cheaper than joining a spa or gym.

I used to tape 30 min aerobics shows and do them when I have time.

I ride my bike to work most days. My wife really likes jogging and walking, but she likes it for the social aspects in addition to the physical benefits. It is nice to multi task while exercising (ie do some planning as we walk, etc). We sometimes walk to the store if we are going to rent a movie or pick up just a few groceries. It takes some planning ahead but we walk quite a bit when we have the time. I miss being a college students where access to a gym was affordable.

I run after a 2 1/2 year old future footies (soccer) star. But I like the idea of group yoga with a share of the cost. Thanks for posting this idea and all the best to you.

Hey Flinnie:

It works well. We have even started putting in a little bit extra into the yoga bank. We've set a flat (very affordable) fee for the class and after we pay $65 for the trainer, we save the extra for a future girl's night out, a party or some kind of fun evening that will not cost extra.

Also when the class has fewer members because of vacations, appointments, etc, -- our yoga bank pays the difference between the flat fee and the hourly charge.

By the way, my friends have also used this strategy for tutors for children (Spanish/English Lessons) and for other things. One tutor will deal with two or three children during the hour.

Often teachers and trainers don't care how much they are paid as long as they receive their basically hourly rate.

It's the same hour and the students benefit from the extra attention provided by a small group setting.

Hey Bluezy:
Oh yeah...running after kids is great exercise. Very organic and toddler friendly. My youngest is eight, but I'm still catching my breath from the toddler years.

I wish you the best also.

You'd be surprised with the folks on this board. I have mentioned that I use a personal trainer by myself (she told me the secret on how to order - 12 sessions or more you get 50$/session). Haven't had to use the asbestos shield yet.

If you are losing pounds and inches and you are getting healthy; if you can afford it; and if you are using the pt's time fully, it can be quite frugal. The trick is to spend money wisely, not not spend it at all.

That's a nice tip!

Thanks! I have the same philosphy. I believe in living well and using my money meaningful.

I'll walk 1.5 miles to save the $1.50 bus fare and get a cheap workout in; but I will pay for the services of a PT because staying fit is important to me and my long-term fiscal plan.

I walk down my canyon road to the gate (about a mile) and then back again every day. Going down is a sweet pleasure, with the scenery, surrounding mountains, gentle breeze etc.........coming back up just about puts me away. But it sure feels good when I get back home!

Great idea! Keep it up. You may want to mix it up with walking, and other exercise so it does not get boring. I put in a home gym 14 years ago and still use it. I mix in bicycling and walking.
