Default Grass seed

So DFIL buys us some grass seed, (our lawn is atrocious) My fist thought was how sweet, and when am I going to find time to do anything with it, or make DH do it (he is wonderful, but generally if I don't have the energy for yard work, I need his help in the house) But it turns out he let the guy know we needed stuff for LAZY people (that would be us!) and it only needs dumped lightly watered, and some sort of broken up ground first (DFIL bought us this fancy thing to do that)

Now my question is, he got us two bags, is there anway to get those two bags to do more than the area they recomend, or is there anyway to get the grass to spread? Does grass spread? I have a feeling if I didn't want it to it would!

LOL

I know that grass will spread on its own eventually, but it takes time for it to do so. Sorry I can't help out, but you comment did make me laugh.

Post Re: Grass seed

Depends on what kind of grass seed. If it is Fescue or Kentucky 31 which are common here in NC you only need to start with about half the recomended amount or the seedlings will kill each other off. Unless we get rain you will need to water it 2 times a day. Not a lot of water, just enough to wet the soil.

You may also want to consider getting some wheat straw to put on top of the grass. Cheap stuff, helps with runoff and the critters that eat seeds like birds. Less grass seed wasted.

After the about 10-14 days you should see grass coming up. after about a month you can see where it needs to be filled in.

It is getting late to put seed down. So if it is not that big of a deal and you can wait until fall you will get better results.

Also if it is Fescue then you want to let it grow to 4" in height and maintain that height for a nice looking lawn.

Advantage less mowing. It also goes dormant from about July through beginning of September so even less mowing.

Thanks for the info, we go the second bag out and since my lawn is mostly hard packed dirt it is abit important to do it now, not to meniton FIL will be asking about it in a couple weeks when we go see him, hopefully we will have some grass to report. Any amount would be more than the dusty dirt we have now!

mowing? you mean I have to mow it if it grows! yuck! (JK ... sortof)
