Find out where they're registered, go on Ebay and try to get gift cards for those stores - you can usually save at least 15%. Combined with coupons that you may find (20% off an item at Linens N Things or Bed, Bath & Beyond or 15% of Macy's) you can save a lot of money.

For the baby shower buy a "cute little outfit" that's for when the baby is older. Therefore, you should be able to get it out of season and on clearance. Moms get too many tiny clothes anyway

My wedding standard is based on how well I know the people, how much they spent on my wedding, and how expensive the wedding is (ie, how much did they have to spend to invite me?) Sounds shallow, but . . . Also, never buy a card if you send a present. A little tag is fine. Finally, buying a gift (opposed to cash or gift card) always leaves more abiguity on what you spent, so if you're trying to put up appearances at a low price, gifts are the way to go. (Unless you can get the discounted gift cards like mj mentioned.) Good luck!

MJRube's Idea of gift cards in the stores is PERFECT. I've found that sometimes the couple to be aren't given enough time to pick out what they want at leisure.. the whole process is rushed and unpleasant. Gift cards are the way to go!

At my wedding I got a billion things that were returned or goodwilled, so gift cards are my bet, if you honestly can't afford a large amount go with a small one, I apriciated every cent we got. And all the moey'gift car5ds were used. So long as the person is nice and cool, they wont care if it is small (or nonexistant from some of my friends)
