Good ideas but you could also now go to the Dollar Movies. Especially on the nights where they have .50 cent night.

Matinees are pretty cheap as well. I used to love the Drive-in Movies. I am not sure the cost of those though? I am sure they are cheaper than going to a regular movie theater.

Hmm, where I am the "dollar movies" are $3. But they also sell pizza and beer and have tables for you to put it on, which is cool.

Matinees aren't that cheap - around $6.50 for a regular theater, compared to $9 for an evening ticket.

In any case I much prefer going to the theater to watching something on video. Half the experience is sharing it with all those other people. But maybe you could start a movie watching club and find a free space to meet and set up a TV.

All that being said, I haven't been to the theater in a couple of months - just trying to save $$. I used to see about 30-50 movies a year, at full price.

BTW sometimes small film festivals are cheaper - e.g. $6 for four or six hours of films. Sometimes they're short films so you really get to see a lot. And sometimes the filmmakers are there, too.

Re: movies, We don't see movies at the theater too often (maybe once ever 3-4 months). We went to see V for Vendetta last night, at the student rate of $6.50/each -- we had to leave 10 minutes before the end of the movie because there was a fire at the other end of the mall. We've got free passes for movies there another time, but man was that annoying!! No way are we going to go back and sit through 2 hours again just to see the last 10 minutes.
Waste of 2 hours and $13!

University have often cult, classic movie night for free or fairly cheap. They are showing outdoors movie for free (donation welcomed) at a nearby park all summer.

We very rarely go to the movies. Sometimes my sister or brother take the kids to a movie. We went as a family to see Harry Potter last November and it was an expensive day.

In the summer there are free kids movies so watch out for those.

I have been to 5 movies in the last 10 or more years. I only pick the ones that I think will be great, like Forest Gump. If you wait a while, the movie usually makes it to television. I guess I find it hard to pay $5 (or whatever it is today) to go to a crowded movie.
When I was a kid, it was 14 cents (9cents at the theater with rats) to get in. Even when I got older it was only 35 cents.
I guess I just don't like to sit still that long, so I have saved a lot of money not going to movies.

I haven't been to a movie in a theatre since Lion King came out, the first time! Not wild about theatres, think it has something to do with my need to have windows..........don't like bowling alleys for the same reason.

I do have a subscription to Netflix these days..........splitting the membership fee with the other 2 people here in the house, so it's pretty cheap. All the movies we can fit in. I am enjoying this, although I think the novelty will wear off pretty soon, spring........summer........they just don't seem as movie friendly as winter, long evenings and the wood stove cranked up.

We go to a matinee six times a year, max, at $3.50 for each of us = $42.00. During the winter we rent Netflix (for 4 months). We rent 15 movies per month @ $18.89 = $1.26. We don't have to drive to a rental "store" to get the movies, which saves on gas, and since we have toddler, we don't have to spend time in the store with an impatient/busy toddler.

WARNING- THIS IS DISGUSTING---
If saving money doesn't convince you to stay out of the movie theatre, then this actually might. A couple of years ago, my husband and I went to the movie theatre and I sat in dried up puke. It was in my seat from a previous show! When we went to tell someone and ask for our money back since we were obviously leaving without seeing the movie at that point, they didn't even ask where it was. They had no intention of cleaning it up and could care less if someone else sat in it! I've only been to the movies once since then and that was to see Mel Gibson's, "The Passion of The Christ." I checked my seat very carefully before sitting down!

We do Netflix as well and I feel that it is well worth it to us as a family! We watch a lot of movies these day as well as catch up on some TV shows.

We also use Netflix to catch up on TV shows, since we don't even have an antenna connected to the TV (no cable, no dish, nothing). This is more than adequate to meet our needs.

We know the man who owns the movie theatre in our town, and he manages it attentively. We were married in that movie theatre, and although I would not suggest eating off of the chairs or floor, it is respectably clean. In my experience, every cinema/theatre has soda/pop/soft drink stickiness on the floor. If you do want to see an occassional movie, and do not want to risk sitting in dried bodily fluids, bring a seat cushion/pad in with you.

OK we had almost the exact thing happen! My fiancee dragged me to see "Larry The Cable Guy", 20 min from the end, a tornado warning was issued so they evacuated the theater. We got free passes as well, and I was actually quite thankful to leave rofl. We dont see movies much either, maybe once every few months, but we have quite a massive dvd collection, gotten quite cheaply!

Pff. I saw V for Vendetta twice for fun! I loved that movie!

Im pretty picky about movies...I see about one a month, but I watch 4 rentals from Netflix a month as well for the $9.99 rate.

I just wanted to chime in on the thought posted earlier that part of the movie experience was "sharing it with all those other people." On this point, I am completely the opposite. Between the babies crying, people getting up, people talking, munching on food, and cell phones, I hate "sharing" the movie with other people.

I'd much rather watch most movies at home. Not to mention the fact that I rent movies locally for $1.25 each vs the ever-growing ticket prices at the box office.

I will admit that there are a few times when the theater experience may be better. If a movie is loaded with great special effects or the cinematography is special then to see it on the big screen may be worth it. For most movies though I am strictly an at-home viewer.

My video store near my house has a 3 movies for 3$... It helps me save about 27$ from going to the movie to watch it and I save about 3-4$ for the bus. My cousin is crazy though, I remembered seeing her on the bus stop to see a movie with her friend every Friday while I was working that day, she thinks she save money in transportation because her uncle sell bus card, but not on movies that cost like 10$, she should've go on Tuesday or Wednesday when it's 6$ all day, she told me it's more fun to go watch it in a big screen T.V and she's always complain that I don't go out often with her. Duh... It's expensive and so is she. Anyways, I don't often watch movies, so 3 movies for 3 bucks is a steal for me! =D

I use to rent a lot of movies. It is much more fun to watch them at home for only $2. I just don't much care for movies anymore.
