Default TV viewing

I finally got my DH to put ALL the tv and computer stuff on those outlet strip thingies? (ok brain left with the first kid, he stole it, smart kid though)

Anyway since I have to reach behind my TV to flick the outlet switch then turn it on, I have been waching a lot less TV. 'Course I already don't have cable but still any reduction helps. I figure I am saving on electricity and I am saving on time. If I am not watching TV I have to be doing something else. Sometimes even work around the house.

Great job on cutting back on tv though! I've been trying to cut it down to 1 hour a night... though some nights there are programs I really want to see and other nights there are none, so I've started recording any shows that run beyond my hour of tv time a night, and watch an hour of the tape on days I have nothing I care to watch, and on weekends if there's time.

If watching TV costs that much money due to the commercials, do you think getting a service like TiVo where you can fastforward through all the commercials would be a good investment?

That is an interesting question. It would make a great study. Just going on a gutt feeling, it probably would help only a bit, but not watching TV at all would be much better. Part of the problem is that more and more advertising is getting placed into the actual shows so you still get advertising when skipping commercials

I probably watch about 6-8 hours of tv a week. I should keep track of it sometime just to see. I'm just not a big tv person, but when I sit down in front of it, it's usually a couple hours of Court TV at a time. I've been reading a lot more lately.

I wouldn't recommend tracking how much tv you watch, well, unless you actually want to try to cut down on tv to do something more productive with your time I think I might watch MORE tv now that I have a digital video recorder through my cable company. My work hours and love for eight hours of sleep limited my television options. Now, with my DVR, there is a world of possibilities. For instance, yesterday, I was able to watch a show about a dog who played soccer and saved the relationship of a boy and his estranged father. Hmmm...maybe I should be a bit more discriminating with my time...

We don't have tv. We do get Netflix, which gives us 3 movies a week. Sometimes we rent movies for free at the library. We really don't have time to watch tv.

i was close to getting rid of our cable. i luckily live in an area that is close to four states. i already had dad put in the wall jacks for each room. our radio shack burnt down here tho. so now im awaiting the travel to one farther away. with an antenna and roater, costs about 200 to 300 minimum investment, cheap antenna. but with the jacks, i can use a spliter in each room also for the radio. i also have a built in in the living room. so this will be great eventually. i spend 200 on cable in two months. ill still have a bill, but it will be internet only. i asked in advance and its in thier original poster which i kept that you do not need cable to have thier internet. the only thing i will miss is noggin. so ill be taping alot of it. i just bought a laurie berkner cd too, my son loves it. most of the shows on there are nickelodeon and pbs, so we will still have the pbs and four channels to chose from. i live near cairo ill, dyersburg tenn, paragould ark, and paduccha ky. plus our own stations. so check your area, u may save tons too.

Haven't watched TV in years, except when I'm on the treadmill at the gym. Sometimes I feel guilty like I "should watch" some program I've heard about. But I never get around to watching it. Besides I don't split the cable with my roommates (they pay it all), so I'd feel guilty watching the TV.

By the way, it costs about $60/mo. for the regular cable package where I am. But you can download four episodes a month of your favorite TV show from iTunes for $8. What's cheaper? I'd have to watch a lot of TV to account for $60! (Granted, you may be able to use an antenna where you are, or you can get minimal cable for $10.)
