Default I'm getting home remodeling with free labor

2 years ago, I called our local votech-building trades and asked if they did any home updates or remodels. I was told they did, but had a long list and they put me on it. I just got a phone call! The class will start right after Easter break is over to remodel a bathroom in my home. I pay for the materials. The instructor is a licensed general contractor plus, this is a high school class-so they are insured and all. The school buys the materials, and gets a discount-I just have to reimburse them. Part of their learning experience is for them to do the shopping, present me with a contract they draw up...if it is done wrong, or there is a problem, they will correct it. All work is done by the students under the direction of the instructor. I feel very comfortable doing this, as he is the same instructor who taught building trades 27 years ago when I was in high school. The students build a home every year, and with the time left over, they do remodels and repairs. They finished the home for the 2004-2005 school year 2 weeks ago and it has already been sold. The teacher estimated I am looking at around $650 for. a new bathroom window, tub and shower combo, toilet and sink. I already have the tile for the walls and the new carpet-its in my shed. I had a contractor look at it before and he quoted me around $2700-that was a couple years ago, so would be mroe now. The team of 6 boys will work on it 8:15-11:45 daily. The instructor estimated 1 week or a little longer. This is something some of you may want to check out--our school also does concrete work. The vo-tech ag class will prune your fruit trees and grapes (they get graded on it-so they do it correctly), and analize your soil-no charge for any of it.

What a wonderful way to save on costs! A win-win situation for everyone involved. Finding trade schools and such is a great way to get discounts on all kinds of things. Even though you had to wait a bit, you will have saved yourself a bundle.
