Default How would you recycle a worn out sleeping bag?

My son has asked for a new sleeping bag for Christmas and I plan to get it for him.

I would like to reuse the old sleeping bag somehow. I don't know in what way his sleeping bag is worn out, but I'm guessing that the interior flannel is worn through and probably the stuffing at those worn places is ratty.

I'm thinking about patching up the filling with new pieces of quilting loft (or something?) and removing the zipper. I think I will make something like a duvet cover for the whole thing. Only it will be permanently secured, in the fashion of those old tied quilts.

Any other ideas how to use the materials from an old sleeping bag?

Ideas, but I am not very handy, so not sure how to make it happen:
  1. Doggie bed
  2. Cut to use for the inside of pillows
  3. Inside of bing bag.
  4. Part of a kid's fort

I think you need to assess the damage first..might be a simple patch makes it ready for a new scout who doesn't have one.

I took sons' old sleeping bags down to our local tent city. They weren't in perfect shape, but folks were glad to get them.

Best solution would be to give it to a homeless person, especially now that winters on it's way (depending where you live)...

Either that or maybe a shelter could use it and they could give it to someone in need.

You could just sell it on craigslist or in a garage sale. Personally i would keep it never know when you might need some extra warmth some day!
