I am wondering if I were to upgrade to a new phone that handles data very well and were to sign up for a data only plan, could I use a service like Google Voice instead of buying a phone plane. He is what I am thinking: I currently have Sprint service and am able to upgrade my phone at a discount. If I upgrade to the Palm Pre and only use a data plan from Sprint then I could lower my phone bill to about $20 a month. Have any of you tried to do anything like this or know if it will work?

I am not sure about this, but I do not think any companies that would provide you with a data plan without some sort of basic voice plan. Even if a company would do this, I do not think that using Google Voice over a data plan would be reliable enough to use as your primary phone. God forbid you get in some sort of emergency, you would want to be able to make a call as easily as possible.

That in itself is not a bad idea, and if you search "VOIP", you may find many more options available to you.
I've been using Skype for a while now, and still do. For people with internet connections, it's easy, and PC-to-PC calls are complete free! |

A lot of people use VOIP and purchase the smallest number of minutes possible. I know that Verizon specifically addressed this sort of thing with Google Voice (disallowing it) and with Skype (allowing it).
