frugal but effective alternatives to bleach?

For environmental reasons, I don't like to use chlorine bleach. However, it is excellent for certain cleaning chores, such as the old grout in our shower stall, and the toilet bowl. We can dilute it in a spray bottle, spritz, and be done.

Anyone know of any inexpensive alternatives? (ideas that are also as easy as bleach-it-and-walk-away would be nice )

Have you tried Steam cleaning? Hubby bought a "steam buggy" a while back and I use it for everything around here.. it works wonders on floors! Nothing like the power of water!
