I dunno, florescent or somehting, they are supposed to be less than half the cost of the regular kind to run. We had some hiding in the laundry room, so DH decides to put them out around the house. Now mind you we almost never have anylights on excet the kitchen or living room right before bedtime and our room for a couple of hours. He seems to think this well save us 20$ on the electric bill! They make a funny noise but I can get used to that if it is cheaper. All 'cause DH read on CNN about some frugal dude who replaced ALL his lights with them and saved 50$ a month. DH decided he liked the idea, I am not sure going and buying new lightbulbs to replace the working ones makes sense, but hey, anything to keep DH in the frugal mode. I am also thinking that guy must have had a lot of lights to save 50 on his bill, mine is around 50 normally! (heat is gas) MAybe he meant in a year?

They will save you money (after the initial purchase price shock) and should last quite a few years. But I think the $20 would be for the year. You'll notice that they also operate cooler than the typical yellow bulbs and that the light is whiter. So theoretically your heating and cooling bills would be less as well. I don't notice mine being that loud, but maybe it's the brand.

We had our electric company make the house we rented more energy efficient to help bring our electric bills down. (this was a free service, call and ask your electric company if they offer or know of a government agency that offers it) One of the things they did was gave us 7 of the bulbs you are talking about. they are spiral shaped. unfortunatly, 1/2 of them did not survive the move. The ones that did survive are still working over a year later- and with 4 kids the lights ALWAYS seem to be on.

We love ours. I don't think our bill came down $20 a month with them - but there is a savings. Mine don't make any noise either. I got mine at Sams - I got 6 bulbs for $11.xx Cheapest I could find them.

I don't know how much anyone knows, so sorry if this is a repeat. The noise is caused by the ballast. Flourescent lamps needs ballasts to operate. If you have a standard strip light, inside the fixture you'll see a long rectangular box with wires coming out, that's the ballast. Well for the compact flourescent (the lamp variety), they needed to shrink the ballasts. So you'll notice that the base of the bulb is white and probably looks larger and more bulky. That's the ballast. It is a possibility that the ballast is bad, and causing the noise.

so thats why the ones in the living room don't make noise, just the bedroom one. Thanks. I should be able to just replace that one and have a quiet night tonight!
