Since I'm retired and have more time on my hands, I walk a lot more these days to do errands. The bank is about a 10 minute walk away. The store is farther, but still within a bicycle ride when just a single item or two needs to be picked up.. I do this mainly for my health, but it has also reduced our driving . It's amazing how many little trips I was making before. I was wondering if other people do a lot of walking or id the car is essential for every trip out of the house?

I could walk more. I get into this rushing mindset, and yet the days where DD and I do walk instead of drive I feel better mentally. I don't know why I feel the need to zoom through the days. We have stores within walking distance, and easily within biking distance.

WE have no stores within walking distance, but we do walk to the park and to friends houses, and the pool. I have found that my DD hates the cold, so we havn't been doing as much walking has normal, and it is showing on me

We chose our house and centrally-located neighborhood specifically so we could walk to places (shops, eateries, parks, library, my parents, church, etc), and the kids and I often do --at least when the weather is agreeable and we have the time (which with our very busy schlep schedule these days, we often don't). DH walks to and from work every single day though, rain or shine (or snow/ice!). He really enjoys it -- and it enabled us to get by with just one vehicle for our family for the longest time.....

I usually walk home from church on Sundays (my husband doesn't stay for a Bible study class that I do) and ride my bike to the grocery store for small things. Those are the only things we live close to (and the park). I would love to live in some sort of downtown area where I could walk everywhere, but then we'd have no yard!

DH and I try to get out for an early (5:30am) 2 mile walk 5 days a week. But if it's below 10 degrees we use an Airdyne exercyle.
Since he's retiring this spring we plan on a couple 3-4 mile walks several days a week. |
