I think spending a little more on vehicles and clothing can pay off in the long run ... you don't end up in the shop as often, and you don't have to keep replacing your clothes because they shrunk or wore out.

My mom sacrifices quality for COLOR. Seriously.

She has one bathroom that is decorated in shades of cranberry. She buys ONE PLY toilet paper, BECAUSE it is pink and "matches." Same thing with the master bathroom, decorated in blue. One ply blue TP, because it "matches."

What's wrong with two ply and WHITE? I thought white went with everything.

It's refreshing to read some honest answers, not that most posters are honest, but people outside of here often are not...

I would say I wouldn't scrimp on fruit and vegetables, tp, and medicine. Two for health and one is comfort!

Boots, socks, and tools. I had the soles replaced on my favorite Red Wing work boots this year - I've had them for 14 years. I only buy hand tools that come with a lifetime guarantee - two years ago I got my fourth ratcheting wrench replaced from a 20-year-old socket set. I pay around $4 to $6 a pair for the best RW tube socks - they never get holes in them but when they get thin after 6 or 7 years I have to turn them into rags.

I don't want to compromise on my basic necessities:

Clean water( instead of buying bottled water, I refill large containers )
Nutritious food for both kids and adults
Comfortable( safe and protected) living
Quality education
Communication to build and maintain relationship with family and friends

Food. I buy all of our fruit and veges at the farmers market. It's actually cheaper than the supermarkets, but if by chance the prices increased, I wouldn't swap over.

Coffee. I just can't drink nasty cheap coffee, or instant coffee. It's probably one of the most expensive things we buy when you consider how much you get for how much you pay. (around $8 for 250g).

Petrol. I've heard both sides of the E10 argument (there's nothing wrong with E10 vs. premium is just a ripoff vs. E10 is bad for your engine etc etc), but the fact remains that I do notice that my car really does perform better when it has premium fuel in it. So I buy it.

Our Dog. I buy him fresh meat (as in - meat that you would buy for a human, like rump/porterhouse/chuck etc) and I chop it up and mix it with rice and/or pasta and vegetables. I am sure it probably costs more than buying him canned food, but honestly I wouldnt have a clue as I have never even looked at the price of canned dog food, let alone bought it. Our vet tells us he wishes that more dogs came in looking as healthy as our boy, so I believe we are doing something that matters

Internet access. I might look at ways of reducing the monthly cost, but I don't think I would ever consider NOT having it. I just use it too much, for work, information and personal.

I am sure there are many other things I might have a hard time cutting back on, but these are things that come to mind straight away.

I agree with the bras. I'm a big girl, and (in my opinion) either wear a good one that does the job, or don't bother wearing one at all. in which case, please stay home.

I would never be frugal with good quality food because diet is important in directly affecting your health so I believe that if I have good health, it'll cut costs for me in the long-run when my medical bills will not be as high.

Toilet paper.

I buy the most expensive, environmentally damaging, softest, most absorbant TP. They cut down old-growth hardwoods, grind it up, bleach it, then triple ply it.

If I have to cut expenses to survive, then anything would go. My priorities would be decent food to eat and heat in my home. I really don't need anything other than that. I certainly could survive with cheaper versions of most anything. I would prefer decent food and decent cuts of meat such as white meat versus dark and better cuts of beef though I could make do. And, I also want electricity. So, if I can eat, stay warm and have light to read by, that;s it. There are plenty of ways I can entertain myself for free.

cschin - I think we'd all cut back what we have to in order to survive. The original question is asking about your current budget situation.

So if you are living frugally right now, what is the thing that you aren't so frugal with, or won't compromise?

My mom used to buy Scott's TP when it was like sandpaper. It is much softer now, I think. And I hated it! I swore I'd always buy soft TP.

Also, we use ONLY Kroger's Supreme coffee and we use as much as we want. I also buy sweetener and creamer for my coffee (though I use generic on those). There are very few things I don't buy generic, but I buy the ones I like.

Default On taste...

I bought some lo-cal Orange Juice (sounds healthy too!) because I had a coupon. I bought 2 gallons. Wow was it BAD! So Despite being lower cost and maybe healthier, not a good buy
