A few years from now we will be selling our home and sailing around the world on a sailboat. Now, since for some reason you can't be stateless in the United States (some state has to claim you as a resident), would it be frugal to make that state be Alaska, and if so, would we be eligible for the $2000 to $3000 a year each man woman and child gets for the oil revenue?
It does sound a bit cheesy, but we are going to have to pay tax in some state for our boat even though we will never live there or use their services, so might as well try to reap some benefit. |

You have to be an alaska resident for a certain time before you collect that revenue.
Texas is a popular state for people in your situation.

I'm not certain of it, but beyond the # of years you must be a resident before you get those payments, you also must be physically IN Alaska for I think at least 60 days of the year. Not positive, but I do know there's some sort of restriction along these lines.
As Jim said, Texas is popular, as is Florida--neither have state taxes, and under a number of various circumstances, allow you to live outside the state while still claiming TX/FL residency.
