Whitening teeth

Is there any substitutes for whitening teeth. I'd like to try, but all the kits are really expensive. Does anyone here whiten their teeth an know of a product that works well?

make a paste with baking soda and cooking salt...that helps whiten teeth...

I always wondered, lots of the whitening ads say there is peroxide in them, is that safe to swish with?

I used to use straight baking soda when I was a kid, it didn't work any better than the mentadent stuff with whitening. Though I might go back to it, it is cheaper than mentadent, but tastes much worse.
