Yes. But I usually feed some to my dogs.

i rarely eat bread - i work in a bakery so we get our bread for free and by the time we get halfway through a loaf it will be starting to go stale and i'll bring another home - so we don't eat the crusts on those - plus i usually just bring home the sandwhich loaves and the crusts on them are pretty pathetic.
i like the crusts on homemade bread - they taste delicious when the bread is freshly baked, with a little butter, sliced tomato and cracked pepper.

I firmly believe in equality for ALL slices. I don't discriminate on the basis of color, grain, size, or country of origin. I have a dream that slices will be judged not by the thickness of its crust or its place in the loaf, but by the nutritional content on its label!
....I'm sorry, I may have just been channeling a great speaker from our past for a moment.

btw, this is true, i actually do the same thing (now). Keeping the heels there till the end helps keep the loaf from drying out as quickly.

I like to use them as filler for meatloaf. They also come in handy as a substitute bun for cheeseburgers if you run out or don't have any on hand.

They are my favorite part of the bread. When I cooked for my family if I could have made a loaf off ends we would have been happy. Now that there is just me I like them for hot dog roll one around the dog and two for a hamburger bun.

Hmmm.... I think I discriminate against bread more than most! Not only do I not like the heels, I don't even like the piece next to the heels!! Well, it's still bread and wont kill me to eat it as toast - which is the fate of the rest of the loaf anyways. Ever since bread prices starting getting really bad, I eat EVERY piece in that loaf!
I'm on my 2nd (out of 3) 50 cent loaf I found on the discount rack a week and a half ago. I just freeze them and it sure beats paying $2.00 a loaf!

I like to use the ends as a honey delivery system, you can pile the honey on deep and eat it
(on a normal piece of bread honey drips through unless you put in on real thin and whats the point of that?)

I hardly ever buy bread. We always wind up throwing a lot of it away. So, I put it out in the yard and "something" eats it!

It really just depends in our house. If we get to the end and we need the heals, we use them. If we have another thawed loaf, we might just toss the heals.
Hopefully, this won't offend anyone...in my husbands home they called the ends 'butts'!! Anyone else?

I'll have to agree, the second piece is the worst, but all are good toasted.

Not to be disagreeable, but I actually won't toast the heel... I don't like how overly-crunchy it inevitably gets.... hahaha oh well... such are the ways of individual eating habits!
this really is a pretty funny thread, when you stand back and look at it. We're contending about the choice pieces of a loaf of bread!

It gives us something to do other than cry about market losses, I guess.

Hmm, the end is my favorite part! Most of the people I know don't eat the ends though.

I'm not sure what the big deal is, I have always eaten the heal. It's actually my favorite part of the loaf.

I find that either toasting the crust or spreading garlic on the top and grilling works well!

I eat them... they make good toast (with butter and honey!). Another yummy alternative is to cover the crust with olive oil, and sprinkle with oregano and salt. Delicious!!
