We usually buy Kirkland brand High Efficiency detergent from Costco. I can't remember the number of loads it has, but it's a large rectangular jug with a spout on the end. It's $14.99 CDN.

We siphon it off into the plastic bottles we had left over from before. When I do the laundry, I use less than the recommended amount, and usually wash in cold water. Sometimes we pick up a couple of these jugs, and distribute them to our neighbours, who give us a little bit of money to help support our Costco membership (and cost of gas).

I currently use Tide HE (bought on sale w/ coupons and stockpiled) but once I'm through with my stock pile I'm going to try making my own home made detergent. There are tons of recipes on the internet available.

On a slightly related note, you can save a ton of money by using vinegar instead of fabric softener. I've been doing it for 2 months and my husband (who usually notices EVERYTHING!) hasn't mentioned a difference in our clothes. It's super cheap and better for the environment. I can buy a huge bottle at the grocery store for about $1.50 compared to $4.99 for a smaller bottle of softener.

I use whatever I can get cheap. When most brands went to 3x concentrated, Target had a huge clearance sale. The whole aisle was on clearance. I used coupons and stocked up. I haven't had to buy any since.

Some responses--

I already save that ton of money by not using fabric softener at all.

I never buy detergent at the dollar stores because they are not good buys in my book.

I bought Costco's Kirkland detergent one time but it would not dissolve in our cold water in winter. Our water is from a partly frozen river and then goes to some open reservoirs, so it is cold in winter!) In summer, perhaps it would work.

We do not have CVS here, so there will be no detergent freebies from there. What is WAG? Is that Walgreens? Walgreens here does not reliably stock the items on which they are advertising rebates or really good sales.

Well, I think my plan is I will buy another box of Kirkland's next time I'm at Costco. For summer cold water washing and all hot water washing, I think it should work. Other than that I will mostly just stick with my favorites and continue to watch for sales on them.

Does no one buy detergent from an industrial supply such as sells to commercial laundries, hospitals, and such? I thought maybe someone here would have a novel way to get good detergent at a great price.

I'm a big fan of the Arm & Hammer detergent with no dyes or scents. I can't stand too perfumey detergent. It gives me a headache. It isn't the cheapest, but I find that one box really lasts, so it is economical.
