I have my house now at 65, we tried lower but it wasn't working out to well. 65 is cold enough to need double layers of clothing, but not so cold that you can't type cause your hands are frozen.

When we had a bad wood stove & bad windows, I would heat the house to at least 80 before going to bed, but I wouldn't add any more wood. When we got up in the morning, it was sometimes in the 40's. When my husband would visit, I had to put is clothes on the wood stove so that he could get out of bed without so much discomfort.

I keep it at 62 during the day, and 58 at night.
We have a wood pellet stove in the living room, which is where we spend the most time. We're nice and toasty in that room, and put blankets on in other rooms.

Also - I highly recommend silk pajamas. I asked for some for Christmas. I've been waking up sweating ever since!

I push the thermostat down to 55 when we leave or at night. My ds9 usually is the first one up and he's to set it at 65. I leave it there. If I get really chilled, I may turn it up for a bit, but then back down it goes.

We left a thermometer in my DS's room (the one that used to be my DDS room) IT is about 55 in there at night, with the door closed.

But it turns out it doesn't make a difference, my DD is still cold in the other room that is about 65 all night long. she still wont keep covers on and no amount of layers is enough, so I have a little visitor every night.

66-68 during the day.
60-61 at night.
We have a woodstove going during the day so the furnace doesn't kick in much at all.

65 at night - we leave it off during the day - just bundle up more. Of course we are in florida so that is why we don't use much heat.

Cool Re: how low is low, heatwise?

Brrrrr! You guys are making me shiver...

(Tammy, in what part of FL do you live? I'm in Sarasota County, halfway between Tampa and Fort Myers.)

I've lived in FL for the past 24 years, without central heat or A/C. We have several types of fans for summer and one portable space heater (can be set at 600, 900, or 1500) for winter. Our house is old, so we only set the heater at 900 max.

In the winter, once the night temperature goes below 70F, we turn off the window fan in the bedroom, but use the ceiling fan on low. Below 65F, no fans, but we leave the window open, Below 60F, we close the window. Below 50F, we wear double layers. Below 45F, we heat the room up (set at 600) before going to bed and turn the heater off at bedtime, with the first person awake turning it back on in the morning. When it gets down under 40F, it's time for the long underwear as well as double comforters on the bed.

For the rest of the house, in the daytime it depends upon whether it's warmer indoors or outdoors. You may be scratching your heads, but when a cold front comes through the temperatures can plunge quickly and the house may take a day longer to warm back up. If it's warmer outside, we open up the house, of course. If it's colder, we turn the heater on 900 at first until after breakfast, etc. and we need to turn on the computer(s) and/or TV. They're on the same circuit, old house, think safety. Once we do that, the setting goes down to 600.

We like to *try* to get the house temp up to 70F during the cold days if possible, but 66+ is OK, I guess. Anything below that and I'm too cold. In FL winters, one learns to dress in layers because in the afternoon it may be OK to have just two shirts on but by night, the heater may need to come back on and sweaters as well.

Oh, just FYI, according to our newspaper, for this time of year the average high temperatures are in the low 70sF with average low temperatures in the low 50s.

Sound complicated? Not after 24 years.

My favorite temperature range is 80-85F days and 65-70F nights. Spring and fall weather. Ceiling fan only weather. Yeah...that's when our electric bill is the lowest!

Margaret My mom has a place in Bradenton, FL. Love Sarasota! Have you ever been to the Ringling Brothers House and their gardens. It is so beautiful! Just curious.

Small world, isn't it? No, I haven't. I've been to the Van Wezel for a performance of the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah, also to the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre for The Merry Widow, and to Sarasota Jungle Gardens.

I'd like to go to the Ringling Museum one day and to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

It's funny how a person can live in Venice for 24 years and not even visit many of the main attractions in the same county. Goodness, I hardly ever get to the beach anymore and it's only about 6 blocks away.

Well, living here certainly can save a person money on a vacation. The beach is right down the road! LOL

My husband is originally from Poland and we have family come to visit nearly every year. We enjoy their company and they only have to pay airfare and they do share in buying food, so it works out well.
