Default Electricity Usage Times

Someone posted elsewhere that if you run your washer / dryer ect after 11pm the electricity cost is cheaper?

Anyone know if this is true? Or does it vary by utility company???

Not in my area. You get charged 9 cents per kilowatt hour regardless of when you use the electricity. It may be true in some big cities, but I am sure the power companys would advertise this if they did it.

I checked with my power company and we don't get a break for certain hours either. It would be in areas where the usage of electricity is high in the day time and try to get people to use it at night.

That program is available around here but you have to sign up for it. They need to install a special meter to monitor when you use electricity. A standard meter doesn't do that. It just counts the total usage but gives no info regarding when it was used.

I've never looked into the details. I suppose I really should.

ETA: I just browsed the website and couldn't find any mention of this. Maybe they don't still offer it.

No break for me. It's the same price no matter when I use it.

My parents get a different rate at night, but they also have a business (farm) that is on the same electric bill. I asked my mom and she's not sure if the different rates are available to everyone or just businesses. I know when I lived in a city, I called to ask about this but was told it was not available.

I recently went around the house unplugging virtually everything. When the PC or TV gets turned off I kill the power with the power strip. Even unplug the MW oven when not in use.
