Default Permanent coffee filter

Have you used a permanent coffee filter to replace the paper ones? Happy with it? A nuisance to clean? Does it really last? Did it affect the taste of coffee? What was it made of--metal? plastic? nylon?

Is there an alternative for homemade cloth filters? Or would that make a mess?

my braun came with one. a garage sale find for 5 dollars. isnt hard to clean for dh. i personally use instant, but get all those coffee goodies on here for my dh who prefers brewed. it was worth it too me, have had it 2 years, still rolling. best 5 dollar investment i think from a yard sale.

We only use the gold filter. They are very easy to clean and don't change the taste of the coffee. I think that we replace them about every 5 years.

We just got a new coffee maker and it came with a gold filter, but we still use paper ones because DH has a tendency towards high cholesterol and there's evidence that the oils in brewed coffee raise cholesterol levels and the paper filters catch the oils but the metal ones don't. DH doesn't like the side effects and the cost that comes with statin drugs so we treat it through diet.
