Default Does anyone have On Star??

Does anyone on here have On Star? I wonder if you like it and how much it costs? It came for free for one year on the new car.

We do, but the dealer paid for it for the 2 years-it wont end on the truck till Feb.
We have used it twice with good response, and once without.
FYI, onstar will not work if you are under a canopy (as we were, locked out), in a parking garage or parked underground. They were unable to "ping" our truck to unlock it as we had a canopy over us.

On Star is a great service, no doubt with the service representative able to reach you but like mom-from-mo said, it has its limited use in some areas. I've fallen in love with AAA all over again especially with the unlimited mileage for towing, and an option to help someone else even if you're not driving. If you have a bluetooth enabled car, put AAA on voice recognition and make the call. It would work the same right? But, I do think On Star is a great service. I use my phone for navigation these days though so I wouldn't benefit from that part of the service.

My mom just confirmed that the package she had was $200 a year. My AAA package is $99 a year and I get all kinds of savings on other consumer products, vacation rates, etc.

I had it for free on my old car as well. I never used it.

Every time I've been stuck a cell phone was more useful because the car may lose signal. At least with a cell you can move to a different area to get signal.

i think it would be worth it. as im sure im not the only one thats locked keys in the car, it costed me 38 dollars to get my car unlocked. having that happen a few times would pay for the service in full, wouldnt it?

Just renewed after my 1 year free
Safe & Sound Plan with taxes- $215.42 per year or $20.51 a monh
Directions & Connections Plan wth taxes - $323.67 or $31.28 a month
I only subscribe to the Safe & Sound Plan
I like the monthly diagnostic report I receive by email
I subscribe to the Directions & Connections Plan only when needed for vacation or a month when I'll be on the road a lot away from the home area

Anybody use the America's Choice Plan With OnStar?
I wonder if you can go with another carrier or it has to be Verizon
I don't know that I want to switch my cellphone service to Verizon.
although price seems reasonable - $69.99 a month for 700 shared minutes
between your car hands-free phone & your cellphone with unlimited night, weekend & IN calling - I guess plus taxes
Do unused minutes roll-over?

I think the bigger issue is try to never ever lock yourself out, even if you have the service.

You could also cut a spare key and hide it on the body of the car, or install a keypad to open the door without a key.

Until they start putting backup battery in the system, if your battery is dead the service doesn't work any way.

We had the year of free service when we bought our car.
Ours had ran out and we never renewed. My DH hit a deer and the On Star came on and called the cops for him. So if you are ever in an accident they will come on even if you don't subscribe.

Why can't you use a cell phone and call the cops yourself?

lol your right about trying not too! lol. I wont leave a hideakey though, i dont live in the best of neighborhoods and a spare key to my car costs 75.00 to have made too. We lost one and theres no Ford offices near here, so had to have it done by a cert. locksmith, and it cost 75.00. He told me the key itself costs him 45.00, the 30 is for his time and to cover the cost of the computer he uses.

I know i know should try not to lose the key either, lol, but dh works on barges near the water, with climbing gear, it must of fell out his pocket in the mississippi though.lol
