It may seem that way, right up until the day when you need that insurance. When my wife had emergency gallbladder surgery last year, the bill (before insurance) was $27,000. We paid about $2,200 out of pocket. So insurance picked up $25,000. I pay in about $4,500/year in premiums, so that one event would have cost 5-1/2 years worth of premiums. And later today, my wife is having surgery again, planned this time, to remove a benign tumor from her hand. I'm sure that will be thousands more that the insurance will pay for.
As for auto insurance, in the past 7 years, we've had 2 cars destroyed - one by fire, one in an accident. Insurance paid out about $40,000 between the 2 losses.
So that's well over $65,000 we've collected from insurance in just 7 years, not counting our dental coverage and other medical claims, prescriptions, etc. The true total is probably $100,000 or more. You may not think your insurance is worth it, but trust me, it is worth every penny.
