Default Today's supermarket trip: sales & coupons

One area where we aren't nearly as budget minded as we could be is grocery shopping. We used to be really good about this, but over time, due to hectic schedules and such, we have found ourselves doing a lot more quick trips, buying just what we need, not paying much attention to the weekly sales and hardly ever bothering to use coupons. Little by little, we've been trying to get back on track here.

I just came back from the supermarket. Before going, my wife and I went through the weekly store circular. We also went through the coupons that came in today's paper. Of course, many of the sale items also had coupons appear this week. In addition, the store (Shop Rite) is having their annual can-can sale when they mark down lots of canned items. That's great since those things aren't perishable it is a great time to stock up, especially if you also have coupons for the items.

Anyway, bottom line is that I saved $23.45 taking advantage of store sales and another $8.90 with manufacturer's coupons, so a grand total of $32.35 saved, or about 18% off the total before sales and coupons. And all it took was about 15 minutes to review the circular and clip the coupons.

Today I was making pizza, I had everything except for green bell pepper and tomatoes. I went to the store, and got only what I needed and spent less than $1. I got 1 big pepper(39c) and a few tomatoes (69c/lb). I didn't buy anything else. I made 2 big pizzas on cookie sheets, and 4 small round 9inch. We had 2 people over for dinner tonight, but still have some left for tomorrows lunch to work and I won't have to cook anything for a whole day.

Good for you, DH and I have decided that we are going to try and trim grocery costs even more as well. I am keeping a little plastic organizer in the car with grocery/restaurant coupons in it, no excuse for "forgetting" the items that help us save money!
