My parents always told me that if they gave me a gift, it was mine to do with it as I wish. I feel the same way. I'm with most of you who can't understand why people think regifting is so bad. I'm allergic to stuff with scents and a lot of lotions and things. People who don't know me well have given me some expensive stuff from one of those stores that sell it. I can't use it unless I want to have an allergic reaction, so I have either given it outright to someone I know would love it, or regifted it. Maybe the retailers have started the whole idea of regifting is bad because they are afraid it will cut into their profits! Hehehe

I think retailers have contributed to regifting by making stricter return policies. If I knew where something came from and I could just return it and get cash back, I wouldn't have to regift. But if the store requires a receipt or will only give store credit, returning the item doesn't work. Far better to give it to someone else than to trash it.

I don't see anything wrong with re-gifting. I do it all the time. Before stashing it away in the gift closet , I attach a sticky note, writing when the gift was recieved and from who- so I don't accidently give it back.

You have a very valid point, disneysteve! I bought dh some things from Sears last year a couple of days before Christmas and even with the receipts, it was difficult to exchange (I bought the wrong size).

I think regifting is fine under the following conditions:
1. The person who gave you the gift would have no way of knowing.
2. It is packaged like it is new, and you do not tell the gift recipient that they are receiving something that is regifted. My obnoxious grandmother regifted a present to my mom and told my mom that she was receiving a regifted item then laughed about it. It really hurt my mom's feelings.
3. It is a gift that the recipient will enjoy. Unthoughtful gifts are the worst.

Depends, sometimes. I typically try to donate it so I don't feel so guilty.

I gift I "regifted" this year was a big hit.

I'd tell her if she asked....she's embraced my unembarrassed frugalityat work, and her present to me was a square kleenex box with the flaps lifted off and velcro put in, so that I can re-use it (with toilet paper, cardboard roll removed). Also a nice glass bowl with plastic lid-she got a set of three and that was too many.

Her super cheap gifts were some of the most thoughtful I got! And the rice bowl set she loved, loved, loved.
