Default Cheap Phone Service?

Hi Everyone -

We're in the process of moving, and money is going to be pretty tight. My husband is being transferred with his job, so that means we'll be losing my income. We've been trying to sell our house for seven months, with no luck thus far.

Anyway, my question is this - we are looking for cheap phone service. Nothing seems to be covered in the area. What phone companies do you guys go through, and how much do you pay? We're looking for dial up services, so I can do some job searches there.

Any help would be appreciated - thanks!!

I have VoIP service, which is phone service over the internet. I paid $199 for the year, and that includes all calling features, plus unlimited long distance to Canada and Mexico, super-cheap LD elsewhere. But everyone i know lives here, so that wasn't an issue for me.

You do, however, have to have high-speed internet access, so I don't know if that is an option for you.

I maintain a land line at $25 a month (no cell) and use calling cards at .02 a minute for all long-distance calls. If you shop around these are readily available at that price. I get mine from a local discount supermarket.

Since we moved about 6 months ago, my wife and I have been using a service called OneSuite.com instead of a long distance provider, on our land line. There are no taxes or fees like normal providers and we can use it from anywhere for pennies a minute. It's pretty cool, they also have VoIp software that allow you to place calls from your computer to anyone, all under the same account. And an option to have voicemails sent directly to my email. We've saved a lot on this already not to mention the neat features.

Where I live, I can get a no-frills landline for as cheap as $15 per month. That's with literally nothing extra but a dial tone and local calls.

If you already have internet access, VOIP is generally a good option to look into. If you absolutely can go without an actual phone number, computer-to-computer VOIP can be had for free.

First of all, have you checked to see what is available?? Where I currently live and where I moved from, there was only 1 land line phone company, so we have no choice.
We do have a choice (kind of) with our cell phones--however, Cingular (now at&t) is really the only one that has a good signal on our place

If I recall, my buddy used to use Yahoo's VoIP service for outgoings calls. I believe it was free to all calls within the U.S. , but he had to pay money if he wanted a number so others could call him. So, maybe you could save money by using a cell phone with a low number of minutes and Yahoo's VoIP service for outgoing calls???

Penny Talk is pretty cheap. They charge 1 cent per minute anywhere in the USA + a .49 cent connection fee. Look up their website. It might be of some help. I have had it for four months now and love using it for long distance calls. It does work and connections are crystal clear.

Really! Would that include dial-up?

Default Magic Jack

I used Magic Jack. This needs an internet subscription, works while PC and internet are running. $40/year for the 1st year. And $20/year thereafter. Free outgoing calls to US and Canada.

I checked out the magic jack website. This thing looks insane. Def one of the cheapest phone services I've ever seen. They haven't gone public yet, thats why most people havent heard of it.

That sounds too good to be true. Why do you say "used" ? Was there a problem or was it good quality and legit?

most phone services require add on taxes, so keep that in mind too. with taxes and all, our home phone costs about $23 per month. we have no extras, just a phone line and dial tone. this does not include internet access.

if you dont use your home phone must per month, some phone companies have an unadvertised "minute by minute" plan where you pay for like, 500 minutes per month or so.

all those local buy in signs u see prolly saying 29.99 a month, tis all bull. After the taxes and all they are more like 60. I had budget phone here, with long distance unlimited, moms in mich so need it, costed me 66.72 a month, dumped that and went all cell with mom on verison, 10 dollars a month for my phone limit of 250 mins a month. just for mine, mom has 250 also. i also get 250 free texts a month, so talk to my friend in ohio that way also. Id say thats a great deal, 10 bucks a month. We want to add vonage, supposed to get it for 24.99 a month. looking into it only because, if my kids school needs to call me or i need to call a local call also, i dont have to dial area code and all, and my kids school dont have to call a michigan number. cause its on my moms plan and she lives in mich where i live in mo.
