Default Hardwood flooring

I'm looking for ideas on where to look for really stupendous deals on hardwood flooring, preferably oak. I'll need about 600 square feet and am willing to wait it out for a couple of years to find a bargain. Ideas?

love me some hardwoods! you might find something nice at lumberliquidators.com, but i'm guessing your best bet is to find a reclaimation store in your area: a place where parts from torn down houses get resold. you can find all sorts of things there (light fixtures, toilets, doors), so i don't see why you couldn't find floors as well.

I'd look for a local sawmill and see what they can offer you. May depend on how refined a flooring you're going for. At our old house I put up rough hewn boards as baseboards in my rustic kitchen. It was about a quarter a stick. Four walls and a few angles later it took about 10 sticks to go around the room = $2.50 for wood + appx. 20 cents worth of nails and I was good to go.

I'd also look around at the little towns around your area. Here we have several deep discount lumber places in the surrounding 50 mile radius.

We bought brand new oak hardwood flooring and it was only about $2.28 a foot.

A few things to consider. Are you planning on doing the job yourself? If so, it will obviously only cost you material costs. If you have someone do it for you figure on taking the cost of material and multiplying it by 3. Also, there are a few different grades of flooring. You can go from the laminate type that costs about the same as carpet all the way up to real hardwood that costs around $4.50 per square foot. I would go for the high quality variety. It typically has a lifetime warranty and looks a lot better. You can get flooring at any lumber / hardware store. If you don't have one already, you can open up a Lowes or Home Depot credit card when you purchase your flooring. You'll save 10% on the initial purchase. Then you can balance transfer to a 0% card.
