Default How do you read gas, electric, & water meters?

I want to see how much electric, gas & water I'm using, and see how low I can go. reading the bill each month just doesn't cut it. I'm sure I can find them outside (ashamed to say I'm not sure where they are, we just moved in...3 mos ago). So what are all the numbers on the meters? and which one do i pay attention to?
