Default yard sales... what have you bought?

i know i'm not the only one here that goes to yard sales so i thought i'd ask "what have you bought/are you guys buying at yard sales?"
What is it? how much is it? why did or what made you buy it?

i thought i'd start it off with this mornings finds
$2 - $40 worth of makeup, mostly brand new brand name (body shop, bath
and body works, etc) mostly lip gloss, which i love and use constantly or
\my lips get dry and crack

Default Re: yard sales... what have you bought?

oops... not done yet...
included in the $2 above was a new package of "ouchless" clear rubber bands, 7 lip gloss/balms, 1 lipstick and 3 eye shadows, and my $40 guess is based off the price tags still on most of the items... they were a quarter each but my mom bought a ton of stuff there so i got a deal... i bought them because they were a good deal and because they were things i had been looking for...

$2 - was happy to find some very cute clothes that fit me for 0.50 cents each... got a short cream hula skirt, black shirt, black dress w small red/cream flowers, and this really pretty biege culottes (i think?) with a chiffon overlay...

0.25 - vintage hawaiian earrings with image of diamond head on them... unfortunately didn't notice until later that the plastic was cracked... sad but was nice meeting the sweet little old lady who said she owned them forever...

0.25 - red beaded/netted skullcap type thing. thought it would be fun for halloween, seems kinda small (might be teen size) so might have to sell/give it away

0.50 - pet brush to brush our fluffy kitties
1.00 - 4 small bottles of assorted flavored malts
1.00 - (50 cents each) two large fluffy quality towels for DH to shower because the regular ones are too small
1.00 - bathroom carpet set (minus toilet seat cover), upgrading bathroom carpeting because old one is starting to fall apart, been looking for a decent one
1.00- Brand new in box AirWick air freshener- plug-in oil warmer + 6 refills
3.00 - 2 small electric fans for SIL because hers broke and her room is very warm
0.10 - small pieces of royal purple raw silk for MIL's quilting (purple is her favorite color)

i think that's it... that's all i can remember right now... so we spent a total of $12.10 + cost of gas... it was fun.. =)... how about the rest of you... how are the yard sale bargains going?

I haven't bought anything for the past few years, but when my boys were younger I used to really make out. Adidas soccer cleats worn twice-25 cents, Little Tikes art table-$2. I also am an avid reader and have filled my bookshelves with bestsellers for no more than $2 each.

I bought 2 bikes for $7. One is a big wheel type trike for $2 that DS loves! Then I bought a bigger bike with training wheels for $5 for next year or maybe the year after. you can't beat that unless it's free!

Two weeks ago I went with my sister and father to a few garage sales. At the first one, I bought a Little Tykes turtle sandbox/pool for $1. It wasn't cracked, just missing it's "eyes" and still had it's cover. I had been looking for one of those for close to a year. I just couldn't see spending $40 on a new one.

My dogs LUV that pool! With the hot days we've been having, they bask in the sun while soaking in the pool. They're so fun to watch, especially when they both squeeze into the pool together. One weighs about 70 lbs and the other about 85 lbs. with the pool being only about three feet across.

I cover the pool in the late afternoon, then dump the water in the morning so my rose bush gets a good dousing. My Golden Retiever pup loves when I refill the pool as she trys to bite and catch all the water squirting out of the hose.

I also found that day two framed prints by artist Bob Bonn. They were signed and numbered. I paid $15 for the two of them, then went on line and found out that they go for about $95 EACH! I just bought them because I thought they were colorful and cute.

I don't garage sale much. I'm too afraid that I'll spend all my money on things I never knew I needed....hehehe It's a good distraction every once and awhile though. If I was better at knowing the value of things and their popularity, I would go buy and resell on ebay.

I don't go to garage sales or yard sales. I don't need anymore stuff. I plan to have one soon and I will have some good bargains too!

my family is addicted and although we don't buy much it's a fun family thing... my mom, my sister and her SO, and me and DH all go every weekend... then we all meet back and moms house and help her unload her car (which is always the fullest) and chat, then we have lunch together... it's a nice way to see everybody each weekend...
and yard sales can be a great resource when you need something...since we're young and just starting out we're almost always in need of stuff... the tricky part is deciding what you need... i'm also lucky because my mom has a spot at the swap meet every week so i can always give her my stuff to sell...
ima, that's great about the yard sale... i hope you have lots of buyers and sell lots of stuff.... i can't wait until we reach that point where we have what we need... that probably won't happen for many years though....

This was a busy weekend - I only got to 4 or 5 sales. I bought a very nice dress shirt for DH as he needs them to student teach in the fall - $2. I also bought two new unopened Star Wars puzzles for $1 (box was marked $5) one for DH and one for a gift.
Last weekend I got a lot of nice clothes for myself for about $.50 each, although I did get to stuff a bag for $.50 at one place. I got a few kids books too for about a dime each.

i got 2 unpainted wooden shelves for $1. i bought a .97 can of spray paint and painted them. i am selling my 3 cd/dvd/vhs shelves to a friend with a large dvd collection. so i was happy to find the 2 shelves. i will be condencing my numourous nick nacks to fit these 2 shelves...
for $5 i got a 5 pack of oreck vaccuum bags for my "good vaccuum" (i have a cordless oreck one i got free for trying a oreck air purifyer that i returned and was refunded the 1st 2 payments i made on it) but i needed bags for my good oreck and there isnt an oreck dealer near me, so it hadn't been used since the last bag was full.
i got a donut maker for $1. i know your thinking i probably rarely use it, but so far this summer i have used it 3 times and it works great. also it is compact so doesnt take up much space. The recipe book/ manual said it was purchased in 1978, (before i was born) lol.
i got a very large print of colorfull daisies in vases out of a free box. i added a slightly larger poster frame (on sale at walmart) and i love my huge piece of art.

that's great... i do find that guys clothing in certain sizes, like my own DH, are a little harder to find and can be a bit more expensive...
luckily, clothes for girls are abundant and affordable and have so much more variety... i try to have a controlled approach to getting new clothes but it does help when they are 0.50 or less...

yay, you can vacuum now... now you have plenty of time to look online for good deals to restock on your vacuum bags...
lol about the donut maker... sometimes you never know what kinds of things you'll use a lot... we bought a leather ottoman for MIL at a yard sale for $3 to go with the $5 armchair we knew she needed... she kept the armchair but didn't want the ottomon... after having it go between her house, my mom's house, and ours it finally ended up in my room and now i use it almost every day... plus it has handy storage inside so it's great for that too...
funny think about some older things... sometimes they work better than newer things... i think it has to do with planned obsolescence and also just manufacturers possibly using less durable materials...
very cool about the print.... glad you love it and it worked out great for you...

I love garage saling. I go maybe every other week, just Saturday morning.

Exciting items lately:
* a ton of photo printer paper plus a large box of assorted greeting cards for fify cents.
* Tortilla molds, for fat-free tortilla shells, $1 (high, but we are getting our money's worth!)
* Drying rack, 50 cents
* Misto bottle to spray oil, a quarter (along with 3 other items for the same quarter)
* Popsicle mold for a dime
* Footie pajamas, adult size, for a quarter
* Never used Eagle Creek toiletry bag, $2
* Five picture frames (gifts) for $2

And that's just highlights. Lots of good stuff. I don't like clutter so I pass up a lot of stuff, but I've gotten a lot of good gifts at yard sales.

we didn't spend much this past weekend, less than $20 for a bunch of stuff... went to this one yard sale where everything on the right side of the driveway was 0.50 cents... leather purse and ann taylor shirt, adorable red blouse, and silver belt (for me) and chanel blush and two pairs of boots (for mom), a never used schoolbag for a cousin of mine and poker chips for family game night, all for 0.50 cents each...

got a very cute small purse from "the Sak" for 50 cents to keep my cosmetics/toiletries or other small stuff in...3 more shirts for 50 cents, $1 for a scrapbook binder and minute timer ... bought shoe inserts for a quarter...

DH spent the rest on other stuff... for under $15 he bought a small paintball gun, $1 shoes for work (he's gonna return the payless ones), and a stack of DVD's which were $1-2 each... oh wait, and some electronic stuff that i didn't really look at yet...

Very nice haul. I was camping so missed out this week; glad at least someone raked it in. It surprises me when people don't consider garage saling at all; I wonder if they are just in "bad" garage sale towns?

The best deal I got at a yard sale was last summer when I got two Lladro figures in perfect condition for $5.00 each.
I couldn't believe it. Lladro is not cheap.
I resold them.
A little VW Matchbox car was a good deal too for $2.00. I put it on ebay and made $40.00.
I go almost every Saturday.

I have bought almost everything at garage sales. A lot of what we have is hand-me-downs, but to fill in the gaps, we hit the sales. Kids' clothing, my clothing, toys, furniture. There is a toy salesman down the road that has a sale twice a year for toys new in the package for about 50 cents each. My dh's work clothing is mostly either new or from goodwill. Best ever find was a boatload of computer books, we haggled to take the whole lot of them, enough to fill a 5-shelf book case, for $30. Very good deal, since each of them was worth at least $20, and all the way up to $70. It worked out to about 30 cents apiece.

yep, gotta love those bargains... i don't think we'll ever stop as long as we live near a place that has decent ones...
allyour worth, we're actually pretty bad about the brand name stuff because we don't do a lot of retail shopping... i've slowly started paying more attention in the hopes that i'll be a more discriminating yard sale shopper...
