You can make soap. Recipes are on the internet.

I've heard of using it as a body moisturizer.

I wonder if you could use it in instead of suet in winter mixes for bird feeding. Not for summer--I'm sure it would melt. But I'd ask a serious bird person just in case there might be any health issues to birds eating hydrogenated oils.

Two pounds of lipgloss is one heck of a lot of lipgloss!!

It's grease, any thing you would use grease for.
But really I'd give it to a neighbor who does cook with it, or a soup kitchen.

Aside from the fat content, why are you so opposed to cooking with it? A little goes a long way and as part of a balanced diet you really wouldn't see a huge difference.

I use it to coat my cast iron skillets.

Edited to add:

Does it go bad? I have had my container for a couple of years.

I had a client who swore by it as a makeup remover. The lady was in her 80's and had beautiful skin. Never tried it myself, though.

From the research I've done on food storage, as I tend to keep huge quantities of things on hand, unopened shortening will keep for 10 years as long as it is stored in a cool dry place. IE kept some place where it gets too hot/cold and the humidity doesn't make the can rust. Once opened I think you have a few years. I have a huge can I was stupid enought to buy (I now buy smaller containers) and I used for years without a problem...so that's my two cents.

I used shortening, and I kept it for almost 3 yrs in my fridge. I used it to grease the pans when baking.

We've used it a lot more than I thought we would - for greasing pans and sometimes in cooking/baking. Give it to a neighbor if you're not going to use it. Or ask a friend if you can use a tiny 2tbsp of their Crisco.

I've used it in muffins, for half the fat. (Other half vegetable oil, or apple sauce as substitute). IUsing half helps with my mental block against the solid white goo.

I use it to season and reason my cast iron skillets.

The tub I have has lasted fine in the cupboard for over five years.

Okay, I just have to ask...how is buying an entire can of Crisco that you can't use cheaper than just buying a lipgloss/blistex/freebie?

An open can of Crisco is supposed to be good for one year. Mine is two years old and still smells ok. I never thought to put it in the fridge, thanks for that piece of advice.

During the cold of winter, I have used Crisco as a moisterizer. Slather it on your feet and put on thick cotton socks. (It's too hot to do that today!)

For me there's a fun factor in making some craft items as gifts. I love making bath salts with a nice label and ribbon, and it's probably not much cheaper than if I bought bulk cheap calgon, but there's definitely an enhanced gift effect (and it's still cheap, just not cheapest).

So for me the answer of "why not a freebie/cheapie" would be: is this for a gift, or for home use?

Yes Vaseline does work well as a lip gloss. Also it is a good moisturizer for the skin just like someone posted about the 80 year old using Crisco. When I was a teenager and visited my relatives in Dayton, Ohio, they had some women who were there playing cards. I couldn't help but notice how beautiful the women's faces were; skin so smooth! I asked them what did they all use on their skins (I was a teenager with acne) and they told me just use Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. I have been getting compliments on my skin for years now. I buy the Vaseline at Dollar Tree! 99cents store too even.
