Default Saving on Milk!

Ok I have not tried this but I foud this on another message board i frequent. So if you dont like the milk please dont be mad at me. OK here is the recipe

You can change a gallon of WHOLE milk into 2 gallons of 2% or 3 gallons of skim.

What you do is take the gallon of whole milk, add a gallon of water plus 1 T of sugar and 1 t of salt. This will make 2 gallons and I promise it won't taste like watered down milk or anything. If you want to make 3 gallons of skim milk, just add 2 gallons of water and 2 T sugar, 2 t salt

What do you all think? Would this work or is this going to an extreme to save money? I do drink a lot of milk!

I dunno if it will work or not, but . . .a couple of things . . .1) At least where I live, whole milk is 50% more expensive than skim milk, so make sure you factor that in. 2) I'd test the recipe on a small quantity before going to a bigger quantity. 3) There might be a magic mixture involving dry milk that saves lots of money too . . . (For example, most people aren't real thrilled with the taste of dry milk, but maybe when it's mix with "normal" skim or 2% most people would find it tolerable?)

I have to try this. We drink alot of milk but mostly for the calcium so I don't think it will help us. My sister used to use half dry and half regular milk and my first two kids wouldn't drink milk at her house. (neither would I)

How about a goat, that would help with the lawn mowing too.

If I were you, I'd try it, making a small batch. It doesn't really whether any of us would like it or not. I do some things that other poeple wouldn't do, and vice versa. What if nine out of ten people hate this, but you're that one out of ten who does like it?

Depending on where you live, and how much milk one household consumes, you might consider a cow share. Or sharing a cow share with another family.

Why don't you just drink reconstituted powder milk?

3. Yes, the secret is to make it up and chill it for 12 hours before you use reconstituted powder milk. This is the only milk you get at my house.

I know for people with kids it's different, but.....I try not to drink any calories, so I never drink milk. I get plenty of calcium and vitamins from my food, so I don't need juice or milk. I am already overweight, so if I drank calories too I can't imagine what would happen to me. I drink a lot of homemade seltzer, and club soda, and sometimes herbed ice tea, and tap water at restaurants.

I use 100% dry powdered milk, but never in a glass; for baking, or cereal, or as creamer, etc.

If you have the patience, go for it. It would be an interesting experiment. Do you think you'd go through 3 gallons of skim before it turned bad? If so, it might be worth it.

I don't drink milk at all and use soymilk for cooking. Milk is one of the few things I don't skimp on... I buy organic milk from a local farmer who doesn't use cruel methods on his cows and doesn't pump them full of growth hormones because my husband still drinks milk.

The two of us go through about a gallon of milk a week, here skim is about $2.39 right now. This is basically with cereal for breakfast and with dinner a couple nights a week. I can deal with $10 of milk a month when there are health benefits.

I'd cut back to one glass a day and drink more water. Simplest is best in my case.

I always buy 2%. When I was pregnant I drank whole milk and the doctor says the difference: Calories! The 2% is full of the same vitamins and minerals with less calories. I absolutely will not drink powder milk. I grew up on it and it is so nasty. But then again, as said, some people like it.

My dh and kids won't drink reduced fat milk. It doesn't taste the same. We are so used to the whole milk, that the reduced one feels like it is deluited with water.

My mom mixed whole milk with powdered milk and added a drop of vanilla. I could ALWAYS taste the difference, but I didn't really have a choice. That's what we got. I had three younger brothers and it wasn't uncommon to go through two gallons of milk a day!!

I am glad to see that so many people like to drink milk. I thought I was the only one that liked it. I don't drink it anymore cause it is too fattening. I like the Hood low carb chocolate milk now.

Simple, I know, but remembering that milk is in yogurt, and cheese, and so many other things helps me. I bulk up on water more nowadays, and take a good multivitamin. Store brand milk is just as good as brand to me as well
