I don't think I would buy anything. I would look for some sort of investment account that would pay me interest income each month perhaps. There isn't anything I need......... I would rather put the money to work for me.

I wonder what the taxes on that would be?! I'd tithe it and then buy a house and fill it with kids. I'd also put up trust funds for our grandkids and pay off our grown kids houses (if they'd let me - I raised them independant)

I would pay off our debt and our house.
I would put some money into an account for the kids for when they're older.
I would go on a vacation.
I would give some money to my parents.
I would let hubby buy his dream car(anything old)
The rest would go into savings.

I forgot the dream car. Hubby already has his first dream car, 1933 ford victoria, but he has his mind set on the second dream car. If I would let him, he would spend the whole million on cars.

Invested it and retired. Sigh. Should have gone for the party. Beach, definitely casual, everyone dress like you're rich (tshirts and sandals!) Have to get the money past DH though! He hates parties. When you grow up rich, parties are business, not fun. Me, I'd rather be secretly wealthy and have a HECK of a party!

We'd pay off all debts and the mortgage, invest the rest and keep doing what we're doing. We like our life, we just want less debt in it.

I'd pay off all my present and potential debt with 1/4 of the money. Save 1/4 of the money. Use 1/2 towards family otherwise including paying off parent's mortgage and establish a trust fund for nephews. Perhaps a portion of that would go to charity also.

The party HAS to be at the beach. I know the perfect spot- I was out picking up any trash there today!

I'd pay off the farm loan, buy hubby a new work truck, but him a sanford and son truck (his dream vehicle, lolol) A 76 trans am for me. Then maybe, just MAYBE if MIL is nice get her out of her debt but thats it for the family! My mom is set, brothers are financially secure on my side and hubbies brothers can dig themselves out of the holes themselves, only way they'll ever learn

Then build fancy stalls in the barns, fence the rest of the pasture and buy more cattle for the hubbies herd, upgrade a bit of the machinery (nothing brand new tho!)

The rest for retirement

KJ

Sounds like you are happy being a farm girl!! I would buy some more property around here, things are really booming for a town with no paved roads 20 years ago.

I'd buy some rental properties, our own house, and use the rest as seed capital.

In thinking more about it would also attempt to purchase more front land from our other neighbors, if this was possible we could put in a second drive for the other families we share a lane with and then they wouldn't go right past my house 20 gazillion times a day! The land is PRIME land and would just me more for crops and then our retirement when we sell out

Land is a wonderful thing to buy. I had 3 rental properties in the town I lived in, in florida. I would not have rentals again, if they were given to me. Mydh was constantly having to fix them up. We lost money in all of them when we finally sold them. A real big headache!
My FIL built a duplex so he could live on one side and rent the other for $$$. The first tennents tore up the place so bad, he had to spend thousands to fix everything.

Hmm, ok, a million. Well, taxes would take half. So, 500,000 left.

Pay off the house: 130,000
pay off Grandma's house: 20,000
buy new used vehicles: 20,000

I still have 330,000 left to invest. Some of that would go towards helping the kids and the nephews with college, but the rest would go towards retirement.

Side note: I am not neglecting the nieces, I don't have any!!

Oh since we are just dreaming, let's pretend the money is tax free and you have the whole million to spend (or save) You know, a million is not as much as it was when I was a kid. I use to wish I had $10,000 in the bank and I said, then I will be happy and not want anymore. Things have changed.

a nice used car that just drove off the lot- decrease value by 1/3 you know. 15k - preferably a soltice sells for ~20k new

investments-200k, insured

start my own business catering to nevada/california residents initially. caricatures and portraits of course! 100k tops. branding, advertising, supplies.

Moderately nice Home with my own studio/office- 275-300k

so 620k is fine by me (1.25m before tax)

Eventually my business would become self-sustaining and result in further investments. At that point training for the iron-man, coaching an NBA team, and owning a private art school would be priorities. LOL, not overzealous at all

I would buy a 200,000 house and a better car, not necessarily brand new. The rest would go into savings.
