What frugal thing did I do today?

Easy, the wife and I walked about a mile each way to go vote, instead of driving like we used to. Of course, the fact that it is 70 degrees outside (not 40F), probably helps.

Not only did we exercise our civic duty, but our bodies, too!

I re-used a padded envelope to ship something.

Last night, I added chili beans to s-t-r-e-t-c-h the meat on our taco salads. I think I have enough of the meat/bean mixture for another meal. I might turn it into chili with heavy taco seasoning flavor. DH won't mind.

I just discovered that I have only used $14 worth of gas for a whole month of driving (31 days) I think that is pretty good!!

DH and I just tried Walmart brand Mac and Cheese and it was by far WAY cheesier than Kraft! I think Kraft is tasteless now (used to be good when I was a kid) so that is why we tried the Walmart generic and it was so good!

Oh and to the person who asked about reusing towels- we also use a towel for a week. You are clean when you use it! If your teenagers are balking, make them do the laundry! Or hide the towels LOL! My mom had us use a towel for a week and we were always fine with it....

I agree on both points.

On Saturday I made 2 boxes of Great Value (Wal-Mart) brand mac & cheese with half a can of Spam added in. It was delicious! We add the milk, but not the butter or margarine. Just adding a splash more of milk seems to make up for it. The Kraft just isn't as good, IMHO.

About the towels. When I was a teenager, back in the Stone Age, I had to use two towels every day. One for my hair, and the other for the rest. My mom had no problem with it. But once I met my wife, that habit stopped pretty quickly. Now it's one towel per week, and it works just fine.

p.s. My frugal thing for today was to use a measuring cup to measure out an actual serving of my morning cereal.

I agree with the Kraft mac and cheese too. I thought it was just me, but it does not taste as good as it use too. We use generic mac and cheese too. Also, we only use one towel a week also.
We ate dinner at home last night and there was enough leftover for three lunches for my husband to take to work.
Also, had a no use gas today.

Instead of running to the store to get more coffee this morning, I went to the pantry and dug out some coffee from the hotel we stayed at on our last vacation.

Coffee is one of those things that's a "need" so it was good that we had some extra on hand.

Sunday I did the majority of my cooking for the entire week.

Made a chuck pot roast w/ meat from an Aug sale in my freezer, carrots & potatoes bought on sale.
Made salsbury steaks with a lb of ground turkey bought on clearance.

i have sick/vacation days I must use or lose so I am off today and will not be driving anywhere. I will start to change over my closet to winter clothing & get some housework done.

We took DS to his first movie this weekend. We saw Madagascar 2. Fandango was having a BOGO ticket for afternoon showings. So, I bought mine, got DH's free and the theater allowed 3 yrs and under in free (that covered DS). So we only paid $7.50 total for all 3 of us to go to the movies. DS behaved and loved the movie. I can't tell you the last time we'd been to the movies....it's just too expensive now.

I rented 2 free movies from Redbox with the code that they text every Monday. I also got some good deals on groceries and came back home to make a nice big, healthy lunch. No heat on today. I threw on extra layers instead of turning the heat on.

No heat for me either! We brought home leftover ham and rice from the party last night and had that for lunch today. I stayed home and used no gas today also.

Today I bought peanut butter, honey, bread and a pulled pork container. Peanut butter for lunch, pulled pork for supper.

I have been having trouble with my camera not retracting the lens (it had the oh-so-helpful admonishment of "turn the power off and on"), so I looked it up online here:
Re: Sony DSC W5 lens problem
gave it a whack, and it is now working!

I manage a doctor's office and regularly get invited out to free dinners from the big pharma companies. Went to a really nice steak restaurant last night, with drinks, wine and everything for free! woot!

  • Had leftovers for lunch for the 3rd time this week.
  • Made my own coffee at home, as I do every day (since it is sooooooo much better than anything I'll get anywhere else! And its cheaper!)
  • Deposited a reimbursement check I got for negotiating over the phone with car company, regarding "who's fault it was" that a part went bad.
  • Ate some free oranges my mom gave me, which she fresh picked.

Leftovers for lunch for me too, paired with Halloween candy for dessert.
Stopped at CVS on the way home and got Palmolive dish soap for .25$ after Extra bucks and coupon.

Although this isn't recent, it is a frugal idea. Many years ago, my niece -(Goddaughters) Grandfather was over at our house for Thanksgiving. He was from Poland. He told me that his family always took the leftover liquids from any vegetables (i.e. green beans, potatoes, etc.) and used the water for the water addition to the turkey gravy. I don't mind telling you how delicious those liquids from the veggies are because they have been seasoned. I was reminded of that from a previous poster saying she too k the water that had cooked another vegetable to cook someting else.

I have quit buying food. We have 3 refrigerator freezers full and 2 deep freezers full. We have 1/2 a deer, and getting ready to get another 1/2 deer and getting ready to butcher a steer. So, I am trying to center all meals around what we have to make room for the upcoming meat. All I have purchased in the last 2 weeks has mainly been sugar, flour and milk. I may have to get a thing or two to supplement for meals, but for the most part, no more food shopping until I know the meat will fit.
