I have a pretty high tolerance for buying used - more than most people! I have bought most of the above (crib, bed and mattress, clothes, shoes) secondhand. I don't wear make-up, but if I did I would not buy used - same with any type of toiletry, which I have seen plenty of at garage sales. Underwear and socks are pretty much the only things I won't buy used. Although, I did buy a few nursing bras off E-Bay, which I am sure would gross out more than a few people (hey - they are really expensive and I washed them well, of course!).

Interesting question......... I second all the replies, except for the shoes. I can do used shoes easy. Paying big money for new shoes is part of the old me, when I was working outside the home.
I've become so used to thinking used..........it was interesting to ponder this today.

I've done used swimsuits. A good washing and they're probably more sanitary than the ocean I swim in.

I second the baby furniture. It's one thing for highchairs and cribs, if you know what you're looking for, but safety equipment must be bought new (especially carseats).

Used shoes will probably never be an option for me. My shoe size is just too large and my feet are too narrow. As a matter of fact, I tend to have to discard shoes long before they are worn out because they've widened.

Good point on the carseats - I have bought all mine new because you just don't know if they have been in an accident. But all the other baby stuff has been bought used or handed down to me.
I guess I would buy a used swimsuit, but I never find any in good shape. By the time they hit the thrift stores, most are stretched out of shape or worn thin.
One more thing to add to the list: some electronic equipment. I bought my digital camera, video camera, and computer new. So many little things can go wrong, it is one thing I like to have a warranty on. Although I would consider buying "refurbished" items if they came with a warranty. I had to use the warranty on my video camera to get it repaired just a few weeks shy of the warranty expiration.

I buy almost everything used, (not food of course) but am careful of shoes, especially for our DS#2. Shoes that are well worn can hurt a childs growing feet. I agree on the safety equipment also. Unless I sew it (and I buy material at garage sales) it comes from a goodwill or similiar place.

Cars, mattresses, underwear. I have never had luck with a used car and I bought about 15 of them for my daughter. One lasted one day!!

I see people saying they wouldn't buy used food, and I totally understand, but I want to root for the underdog and give two instances of buyable used food.

One: I have known a couple people who say their family "will not" eat leftovers, even perfectly good, large items. So I told them I would rescue whatever they were gonna toss. One lady gave me partial hams, partial roast beef, etc. I was happy to use the food and rescue it from the garbage, especially as at the time these were foods I would not have been able to afford. Though I didn't pay for it in dollars, I did try to repay by doing favors in return. I did try to offer some money, but as the ladies were going to put them in the garbage anyway they wouldn't accept.

Two: certain estate sales have had opened boxes of food I've bought dirt cheap; full (but opened) bottle of worcestershire sauce for dime, big bags of sugar, rice, for a quarter. If I run into an estate sale I definitely will consider the used food.

If I had a child or someone immuno-suppressed in the home I would likely be more cautious, but until then, I am a Used Food Buyer.

Undergarments, shoes, swim suits and used food. You never know what someone might have added to the food once it has been opened - poisons, etc. I trust no one!

Shoes (ick, ewe, and I usually don't gross out!) underwear and food. Everything else is fair game!

lol im sure jake dont mind his son wearing stuff he himself wore, it was all new when he got it as he was my first child. the crib is worth loads of money, its not a recreation, its an original. those are worth prolly what, 750+? the mattress is new tho, no mattress would last that long. i used protectors on it too, i dont take plastic off new mattresses, til they need to be removed. it makes a difference in how long they will last. my bed is only one with plastic removed. mine is a tempra mattress and felt for it to do its job prolly needed it removed. my back is shot after a car wreck, so i had to get a different mattress, i woke up daily iwth back aches. i did still with this mattress too for a week or so, but since then ive felt fine and i havent gotten blurry vision since either from pinched nerves. the guy hit me in my door, pushed me up a street, i seen it coming so i turned my head away so i wouldnt get glass face, he made my spine bend to my right side. it took a year to get it to stay aligned, but every so often it would strain and pinch my nerves. i went to the clinic first, the first time, cause i thought diabetes set in or something, so i had my sugar tested first. then i went to the dr, and they used the electrodes all over my back and neck for an hour, and i felt better. so i try to get that done once a month to maintain, but i havent had another episode since i switched my type of mattress either.
