Default The Money-Jar Thread

OK, this is the money jar thread. Everyone that has a money jar can participate and let's see how much we can save in our money jars together over the entire year. The rules are really simple. If you place money into your money jar, record it here and add it to the grand total. I'm hoping this reminds me to put my change into the jar every night and everyone adding up their coins will inspire us all to save more. So I will begin:

$1.24 added 1/6/2006

Current grand total: $1.24

Oooh...I like this. I've had a money jar for as long as I can remember! The last time I emptied it was in October. It currently holds $47.32, so that's what I'll start with...

Total: $47.32

lol. I just threw in 56 cents to my jar. Are we supposed to add everything up? If that's correct then the new combined total is

$49.12

It might be more doable for people if you make it a contest to see how much people can save in loose change for the month, not the year.

I save money in a sorter bank and generally put it into the bank as soon as possible to roll it over into my ING account. I have 1.98 in change as of this post. As most of the change is quarters it was very easy to do! How about monthly tracking with a year end total?

I use so little cash anymore. Maybe I could go through purchases on the cc each week and round everything up to the next dollar, and then move that into a virtual change jar, aka ING. Hmmm..an idea. It would be the same as saving change, after all.

I like that idea............ how about this for size, the first person to post for the day will add x.xx amount to there jar and everyone has to put the same amount in the jar????? but it has to be a feaseable amount.... not no adding $10 $20 or more into the jar just basically what they have in their pockets for that day???? anyone else like the idea?

I like the idea, but what if we have no change? I just empied my jar at the bank. I guess we could put $1 bills in and an IOU for whatever change we did not have. Yes, that would really force us to save. Since I sleep so late, I would not be the first person posting in the morning.

sweet findings!!!!!! we dont use cash in this house so I'll be lucky if I find a penny!!!
My husband goes through the empty ride seats at work for me to collect change...... I was the only one who went through the seats at the end of the day when I worked at shrek no my hubby says the fight over who gets to dig for change, I use to make ALOT of money at the end of the day at that ride......
If you haven't been on the ride shrek it shakes your seat causing all lose change to fall into pockets.... I use to call the seats my money shakers!!!

Wow! That Shrek ride would be great...fun and profitable.

We only use cash at our house. It adds up really fast, especially when I haven't spent the loonies and twoonies--I only throw these in at the end of the month when I know that I won't need them to make the money in my envelopes last!

...oops, sorry, I didn't add the total in on my last post...

Total: $162.30

I aam getting confused about the total? I am also glad to see someone else that uses the envelope method, I never knew anyone that did that. I just put $1.50 in my change jar, so since I am the first one today, I guess everyone else has to come up with $1.50 today!

For the first week of Jan, this method yields $3.96. I'll go move the money over.

Ok. Last night I sat down and counted out all my quarters in my cow jar (former jelly jar that was washed out) and all the other coins in my Apple Bank.

I had a total of $25.25 in quarters, and a total of $14.70 in dimes, nickels and pennies.

So that makes a grand total of: $39.95

I'm confused. Are we keeping track of the total collection of all of us together, or is everyone keeping track of their own amounts? Or both?

Imasaver, we've been doing the envelope system since October. I think it's one of the smartest money moves we've ever made...

Robex,
I think each person is keeping track of their own amount.

Added: $.95 today

New total: $40.90
