What is a good gift to get for an adult woman that doesn't cost a lot? if you're a woman, what do you like to receive?

My wife is an expert on gifts and she says the biggest thing to understand is what each individual is like. It's no good me suggesting ideas for my wife when your wife is likely to be very different. So you need to find out as much as you can about them.

It sounds obvious to buy a gift that your friend or loved one will like but many people buy gifts that they think that their friend/loved one will like. This often translates into what you think they should like, which might be very different from what they actually want.

If you don't know then there are a number of things you can do to find clues.
Listen to them for verbal clues as to gifts they may like

Observe what they do, movies they watch, sports they play etc.

Look at what they already have and think of complimentary gifts

If you look at the process in these terms then you should be able to find some great gift ideas. If you're stuck you can always try my wifes site for some hints - http://www.good-gift-guide.co.uk

I used to hate the 'pampered baskets' lotion, soaps whatnot, then I finally gave myself permission to actually USE them!

Now I love them, but am never sure how well they are recieved, don't know to many women who USE the 'stuff' and if it isn't used it is just 'stuff'.

Me too! Frugal somehow means you aren't supposed to pamper yourself? My mother HATES those kinds of things. Waste of money. And she is a fairly famous pastier/confectioner, so hates everyone else's cooking and baking.

But, since we moved to the East Coast, last year I sent her Philosophy bath gels of cinnamon rolls, gingerbread, etc., with a note about the fond memories I had of these smells. She complained to me, but my sister says she adored them and is upset that she ran out! Knew I was thinking of her everytime she used them...

In general, i would say that it's ok to think in "practical" terms the rest of the year, but for a birthday or holiday like Christmas, most women would like something that makes them feel special, something not inpersonal like a vacuum cleaner for instance. A book that speaks to a special interest she has, a splurge on a favorite perfume or jewelry that she ordinarily wouldn't get for herself. I know all these things are cheap necessarily, but i personally place a much higher value on a gift that seems thoughtful rather than one where a lot of $$ is spent.

I think my family and friends think I'm way too practical for this, but what I really want is jewelry! Not expensive stuff, but I'd love some simple earrings and necklaces to wear to work.

I also love getting gift certificates to bookstores, because I don't let myself buy books very often and it makes me soooo happy.

Other things I would love to receive as gifts:
Houseplants
Gardening stuff/books about gardening
Nice pens
Note cards
Something home made (a card, food, somebody's art)
Craft stuff like rubber stamps or knitting supplies

I do NOT like to receive decorations for my house (the gift-buyers in my family like country style stuff, and I don't). Do not like to receive clothes (except socks). Do not like to receive candles. Do not like to receive lotions or soap.

I think a good gift is one that requires thought and practicality.

Practical
----------

GC for Clothing Store,
GC for a Hairstylist,
GC for YvesRocher or Avon
Gloves, Hats, Scarfs, Socks,
Or a Kitchen Appliance (Blender, Toaster Oven etc..)

Fun
----

Lingerie (if wife or girlfriend)
Tickets to an artist she likes (music artist)
Passes for local Cinema
MP3 Player (if she's into music)
Handheld Gameboy (if she's into games)
Portable DVD Player (if she's into movies)
Workout Equipment (if she's into fitness, yoga, pilates, etc)

As long as she's the type that won't think your calling her fat if you buy her these things :P

Anything else depends on what she's into.

Have you ever heard of the book "The Five Love Languages"? Well, my love language is not gifts (though it is for some people). My love language? Acts of service! Want to get me a good gift? LABOR! Baby sitting, raking, cleaning, whatever. One year my Dad took my car in to get it fixed (normally he can fix cars himself, but not in this case). I paid for it, but he did all the research, talked to the mechanic, drove it in, picked it up, loaned me a car in the meantime . . . What a great gift!!

I have kind of picky taste, and what I love to get more than anything is a gift card to a home improvement store like Home Depot, a shopping center gift card or a restaraunt or movie theatre or video rental (Blockbuster) gift card. This way, I can get whatever I want and need.

Candles are a great, inexpensive gift.

If Dh reads this, I would like a one time visit from Molly Maid instead of a gift certificate to the spa this year!

I got smart last week.

I have a family website, on it each kid has a page with a link to a wishlist, I put on there things they have been hinting about or eyeing, and put sizes and specifics right there, even a link to the item sometimes.

Last week I did a wishlist for me too, dunno if anyone will look at it, but if they do.... .
