Arrow How to save money on Cigarettes (if you smoke...)

We all know that the best way to save money on cigarettes is not to smoke. However, if you are unwilling to quit, I have a few ideas on how to save ALOT on cigarettes.

I live in PA, and smokes usually cost between $4-$5 a pack. I did some calculations, and I realized that a pack-a-day smoker spends an average of $155/month on cigarettes. And if you take into account going to the convenience store every day, buying a drink or a snack or something while you're there, you could easily be looking at over $200.

Here's what I do to save money. I started to buy roll-your-own tobacco in a 300 gram canister ($14.95). That's a bit more than a carton's worth of tobacco. I but these pre-rolled cigarette tubes, that look just like store-bought cigarettes, filter and all, but empty. ($2.99 for 200-a carton's worth). Then there is a one-time investment of between $6 and $35 for a tobacco-injecting machine, which injects the tobacco into the tube, creating a perfect cigarette. (My machine was $12.95 and does 2 cigs at once).

According to my calculations, rolling cigarettes this way ends up costing between $1.60-$1.80 per pack; and for the pack-a-day smoker, about $50-$55 per month (not including the initial investment of the machine, which pays for itself and some with the first carton you roll)

That should leave you, dear saver, with an extra $100 - $150 a month to tuck away in your savings account, especially when you consider that you no longer are at the convenience store every day, buying little this-and-thats.

Of course, if you quit, you could save even more... But one step at a time!

I used to smoke and it was one of the hardest things I ever did to quite, but I am so happy I did. Not only do I feel better, I save so much money on not buying the cigarettes and lower insurance payments I now qualify for. If you can, quit.

I actually used to roll my own cigarettes, but got out of it (I guess I just got lazy).

I'm not sure about the "injecter," but you can also buy a little machine that will roll the cigarettes up (costs maybe 2-4 bucks) and you roll cigarettes by turning it by hand. You can buy filters seperate (they're maybe a buck for a big bag) and papers. I found when I went from buying packs to rolling my own I cut down because of the effort to roll the cigarettes up Now I buy packs, but I got used to the number of cigarettes I would smoke when rolling my own.

I am "blessed". Well not really because I smoke, but because cigarettes in my part of the state are $2.65 a pack - name brand cigarettes. I spoke to a guy for Pennsylvania who said he pays twice that much.

You can save tons of money on cigarettes if you just quit smoking. You'll see a big difference in your medical bills too.

After smoking for over 30 years, I quit cold turkey. I took the money that I would pay for cigarettes and put in in a jar to save. After 15 years, I have saved a ton on money! My husband quit cold turkey the next year!

What about Native American reservations? My understanding is that they dont have to pay the taxes on cigarettes as they are a sovereign nation....

Supposedly; although I beleive that all of them are supposed to report any tobacco sales to the goverment.. XSmokes.com refers you to a site that sells cigarettes from an Indian territory, on the site they say that they aren't required to report sales to the government, but I beleive that changed...
