Re: Freebie Scams
I am walking a fine line here so delete if need be.
I am going to soon be one of those people with a website that makes money from advertising free offers. I will select only the ones that work for me and do not cause a lot of grief like spam.
For instance, one offer is for 3 free magazines. I get $1.25 for every person who signs up to get the 3 mags for 1 yr for free. Of course they are going to ask you to renew your subscription, but you are not obligated. I have circulated a few of these links around campus and have made some money and have never had any of my friends complain...yet.
Are there junk ads out there? Yes! Scams? Yes!
I am not real sure how to tell the difference until it is too late.
There are a zillion free items, but like Jeffrey said "there are alterior motives". Free snickers candy bars are just trying to get you to be a future buyer. Well free is free and what I do from then on is my choice.
I take all free offers I can and I have no problem doing so, but I also never go for the spam email or popup ones!!!!!!!
Any free offers posted here, should be taken with a grain of salt and if they don't work oh well what are you out.
Always use a junk email addy too!

Re: Freebie Scams
I would also highly recommend staying away from any site where you collect points and redeem that for freebies *cough* milesource *endcough* especially if they dont have a place for members to communicate with one another. They dont have chats or message boards for a reason, so users cant tell other users its a complete ripoff

Re: Freebie Scams
Thanks Jeffrey for all the useful and true info. regarding freebie scams. also another "angle" they use is that they email you sayiing you've won something, or need to verify an email address to send out your freebie/prize. These are either scams or third party offers (which are scams to me) because they certainly NOT free...they cost a lot of time and agrevation !!

Re: Freebie Scams
I think that anyone who has sent for a "freebie" has been a victim of freebie scams...sometimes unwittingly. Jeffrey has posted some VERY helpful information to help distinguish between legit freebies and scams/spams.
Thanks for all your due dilligents Jeffrey!

There are alot of scam sites out there, But are alot of lagitimate ones to. I have done a few that offer money. I sign up, complete an offer(most are free trials with $1.00-$6.95 s/h) than I get a set number of friends to sign up. I have found some forums that pay people to sign up. Once you get the set number of sign ups, You get paid. I have done 3 thus far, all with $500.00 pay outs. I can post screenshots of my paypal to prove it. Its just a judgement call on you. You have to look at the site and determine if its lagit or fake. I would pay an average of $15-$20 for people to sign up under me. Basicly spiltting my free gift. The money gifts are your best bet. They pay that to your paypal. As far as the Ipods, computers, and whatnot, I have not tried those gifts yet.

But keep in mind that not all are that way. My Points is a very good site. You earn points and redeem for gift cards and other stuff. I have been a part of the site for several years. I love it! I have redeemed at least 5 gift cards.

the other thing about collecting points for freebies is that usually the amount of time you have to spend to get enough points to get something, it doesn't make sense. is it worth 2 hours of your time to get $10 in freebies? probably not. that's why i stopped using them

Thank you. I just hated when someone has to come along and mess up a good thing by trying to scam someone.
