Default Soc Sec Disability Questions

We have a family member who has been diagonised with a liver disease. He has been working (just been sick) and test just showed a serious problem. He is scheduled for a biopsy. Right now it looks like cancer or sercouis caused by chemicals at his job. He goes in tomorrow and the dr stressed to bring the wife or another adult family member who could make decisions if need be.

He is worried of course about providing for his family. Since he worked as recently as today, how soon till he can file for disability? Can his wife and children also collect? Of the 3 conditions the dr suspect, all are listed on the website as being qualifiable for disability , but it also indicates you must be unable to work, and he has been working, but the website says disabled for 1 year. It will be one year (or more) but does he have to wait until the end of the year to apply, or can he apply as soon as the diganosis is completed?

If he has a transplant, the ss website indicates he would be disabled for 1 year AFTER the transplant--what about the time leading up to it where he is too sick to work?

The doctor did tell him on the phone (when he called to say surgery tomorrow, we have a serious condition here) that he would "not be going back to work anytime soon".

He has lost 60 lbs since Thanksgiving without trying, sleeps almost nonstop when not working, and taken several vacation days because he was too tired to go to work, and now his BP spikes without any physical effort on his part. His job is physical and it is evident he can't keep working with all this going on.

How does this all work??? We are trying to get a plan in place and relieve the stress of the finincial worry, so we can concentrate on the medical and the healing process.

Has anyone been through this and can you offer some advice here??
