Default Vacuum recommendations?

I am looking for a durable, light, upright vacuum and I would like to spend less than $300. I also don't like the bagless varieties because I think they are really messy. I have heard that dyson's aren't all they are cracked up to me...hoovers can be good but are hit or miss...and have heard mostly good things about oreck's.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I have had a Dyson for about 5 years and I still love it. I used to burn out $100 vacuums at least once a year.

Yup - we have a Kenmore Cannister that we bought years ago (not the newer fancy variety I am sure). LOVE it.

Oh - it is perfect for the stairs!! What else would you use on stairs? I think I love it more since we have stairs.

I personally love not hassling with the bags, etc.

It works well on hardwood and vinyl. I haven't used it on wood, but sure it is fine.
