Question about "Donate"

I am new to posting on this site (although I have been reading a long time). I have not been successful in finding out what the "Donate" means on the postings. Would someone please be kind enough to explain that for me. Thanks.

You can (theoretically -- I don't know any who has done it) give your points you've accumulated to other members.

I've done it once for a rookie who had an outstanding post and somebody has donated to me when I was a newbie as well. As far as I know there's no way to tell who has donated to you though.
