Default Apostrophe is catastrophe when names hit computers

It can stop you from voting, destroy your dental appointments, make it difficult to rent a car or book a flight, even interfere with your college exams... Article

Hehe... this is something that programmers would understand and appreciate... because apostrophes are common conventions in string operations.

On the other hand, it could also be argued that if it's a problem, then the cause is due to poor coding.

Still, quality of code varies out there, and I agree that if you can leave out the apostrophe, it is best to do so....

So far, I've only known one person who has an apostrophe in their official name.

BSA requires no apostrophes, no dashes, no punctuation of any sort on official documents...they got lazy on coding I think!

It does look a bit strange when you see it all minus the punctuation, but it is easier on the typing...I might be insensitive, having no punctuation in my name of any sort.

I agree, bad coding. All of these systems should be able to code around it. I think the problem is that the people coding it just don't think about it.

Coders, check this out:

I sent some of those cartoons to my friends and family, and only one friend laughed. Everyone else just thought I was weird.

Don't have many Irish friends do you. I often just replace the apostrophe with the wildcard character in whatever db I am using (as a contract worker, I get to work with a lot of different databases).
