Question Would you sell your right to vote?

Would you permanently sell your right to vote for $1 million? Half of NYU students polled would. Some would give up a vote for an IPod Touch.

Absolutely! I'd sell it for $10K.

Sorry. Hundreds of thousands of our soldiers have died for our country so we could have the right to vote. I feel that selling my vote would be the ultimate insult to their lives, memory, and honor.

That's a tough one.

On principle alone I'd say definitely not, however that $1M would look pretty good...

lol, we're all talking in the terms of "a million" or at least 10 grand" while I know for a fact that in the poorer parts of the world (like eastern europe) tons of ppl get paid to vote for a specific party for a mere $5 or less. All they have to do is use their phone-camera to picture and then prove that they did indeed vote for what they were paid for. ( btw Id do it for the $1 million almost without thinking)

In that case, I might just give it to them at a discount ... $900k instead of the standard $1M.

Seriously though. For the people who wouldn't do this based solely on "moral responsibility," would you consider selling your vote, then donating the $$$ to a charity institution that promotes the troops? Many people do this with stocks that are a bit gray. They'll invest in the Tobacco Industry and invest the profits in Lung Cancer Research. Why not do the same thing here?

Tough question, one that made me think for a bit. I'd have to say no, I still wouldn't sell my vote if they would donate the money towards the troops. Just because somebody would donate to a charity for selling a vote still doesn't make it right.

I wouldn't. Besides feeling like I betrayed the men (and women) who died for my rights, I couldn't guarantee that the person buying my vote would vote the same way as I would. I want to put in my opinions on how my country should be run.

I wouldn't. While most of us focus on the national elections and how little our vote means there, sometimes the state, county, municipal and local elections only have a few voters that make the difference. Local elections around here are sometimes decided 16-14 or something ridiculous like that. So, I have a LOT of power when I vote in those elections.

Hmmm let me think about this one. Definetely not. The right to vote is somthing men and women have fought about for years. I'd feel terrible if i did'nt vote knowing that select men and women worked hard to get the vote for women, e.g The Suffragettes and Suffragists. Plus i want to have a say on how the country is run and by whom. Does'nt everyone?

i hate to sound selfish.. but i would do it for 1 million. it sure would help us out...and would provide a better future for my children and my aging parents. plus i have a disabled uncle (my godfather) who served in vietnam and received the purple heart -- i could set him up really well with this. he wouldn't mind either.

i dont think i would do it for less than 750k though.

Here's what's sad: There are too many idiots in the country (USA). I honestly don't think everyone should have the right to vote. Think about it... If you were on trial for a murder you didn't commit, how would you feel about some crack heads and non high school graduates deciding your fate? I think there needs to be a criteria met before a person has the right to vote. Just being a citizen isn't enough. People may disagree, but I bet they'd change their mind if they were on trial and had dummies in the jury box.

This is where the whole "a jury of your peers" thing comes in. I see your point, but this analogy fits poorly. Also, this argument seems absurd when you consider that the decisions that an elected official makes affects ALL citizens. How would you feel if you had to live according to a bone-headed decision by an official you weren't allowed to vote for/against??

Only somebody who isn't worth being elected would want to buy the vote. Though it sure is tempting but still by selling my right to vote I am forfeiting the freedom of my conscience. After all in life, money isn't everything.

I can't imagine selling my right to vote. I would think that the only people willing to do that would be those that know nothing about the history of our country.
