34 wpm, 1 mistake.
Obviously I am not a typist. What does the cpm abbreviation mean? I did not even pay attention to it when I saw mine. |

![]() The scary part is, according to some of the digg comments, there are some super fast typers out there! After about 10 tries, I average around 100WPM and 1 to 3 mistakes. The only thing I can "complain" about is that I'm typing on the work keyboard, not my own. ![]() |

well according to Wki., you all spend too much time on a keyboard!
Course I am wondering why 33 and 19 seem to be for the same thing????? In one study of average computer users, the average rate for transcription was 33 words per minute, and only 19 words per minute for transcription.[1] In the same study, when the group was dividing into "fast", "moderate" and "slow" groups, the average speeds were 40wpm, 35wpm, and 23wpm respectively. Two-finger typists, sometimes also referred to as "Hunt-and-Peck" typists can reach speeds of about 37wpm for memorized text, and 27wpm when copying text.[2] An average typist reaches 50 to 70wpm, while some positions can require 80 to 95 (usually the minimum required for dispatch positions and other typing jobs), and some advanced typists work at speeds above 120. As of 2005, Barbara Blackburn is the fastest typist in the world, according to The Guinness Book of World Records. Using the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, she has maintained 150 wpm for 50 minutes, 170 wpm for shorter periods of time, and has been clocked at a peak speed of 212 wpm. Blackburn failed her typing class in high school, first encountered the Dvorak keyboard in 1938, quickly learned to achieve very high speeds, and occasionally toured giving speed-typing demonstrations during her secretarial career. more here are you sure that thing is accurate? |

there's a difference in typing something you're reading (the 33 wpm) and something that's being read to you (the transciption at 19 wpm). about 70% of american's are visual learners and would therefore be faster typing something they were reading as opposed to something they were hearing.

I'll have to try it and then report my findings! I love these kind of things! |

Nowadays, you don't find too many people emphasizing perfection since it's very easy to correct mistakes on a computer. |

tina...it says "the average rate for transcription was 33 words per minute, and only 19 words per minute for transcription" which to me reads 33wpm for transcription and 19wpm for transcription....what you say makes perfect sense..but..thats not what they said....
I have looked at it a billion times trying to see if I am being dislexic or something, but I don't think I am... never seen a dvorak keyboard..... |

Hmmm....not going to win any competitions here...lol
82.51 wpm 334 cpm 2 mistakes. I definately type faster than that when typing words from my own head. Typing while reading slows me down. ![]() |

I had a typing class in high school because they cancelled the philosophy class I wanted. But because they left me hanging, promising the philosphy class would start late, I ended up going into the typing class six weeks into the semester. I missed some of the initial instruction and the exercises where you just learn muscle memory for where the characters are. So I was forever behind the rest of the class. I hated the class. It was so boring I felt I was going brain dead. It was the only HS class I regularly skipped.
I found six mistakes in the above, and made another --two others--five others-- while writing this sentence. There may be more. It is a wonder I get so long-winded on the internet though I type so slowly and inaccurately. |

It's sad to date myself in the era of manual typewriters. Sigh. Our high school class had only a handful of electric IBMs. We had to rotate in order to be able to type on those. I also typed for the school newspaper so I got to use them more regularly. I still can't believe newspaper people used to type on those manual ones for eons before electric. They were HARD to type on.
