You know what's dangerous? The idiots who decide these things.

Not to mention the fact that everyone is wondering what to do about obesity in children. Here's an idea, let's put fast food in the cafeteria, soda machines in the hall, and then not let them run around or anything because they might get hurt.

you know what's funny? worst i ever got hurt in school was during a spelling test, and i stabbed myself in the leg w/ a pencil... wonder if they're going to ban pencils too?

You can get hurt doing just about anything! I might be the first one to gasp when I see my kids heading for the tallest slide, but I will still let them do it. They are kids - there are going to be hurts, but they will get better. Sheesh.
I mean really, tag? I had to go to the ER for a concussion when I fell off a stage during book fair. A BOOK FAIR! Let's get rid of the books too! Someone might get a paper cut. (sarcasm here, of course)

It's really sad.

A friend was telling DH how his son's school has NO grass. It is all paved.

In contrast, DD's school sits on 150 acres with PLENTY of room to explore, run, play and be a kid!!

I fell over when I found out they had soda machines in their schools. If you really want an eye opener, go to eat with your kids once or twice in elementary school. Those kids only eat out of the junk lines and leave all the good for you food. It was scary.

At one of the public high schools I taught at, cookies and ice cream were sold in the morning, before school. Vending machines were everywhere, and kids subsisted on sugar and fat. It was extremely disturbing.

DD's school serves essentially sugar-free, white flour-free, meat-free lunches. All of the produce is organic. I eat there as well and look forward to lunch. Kids do too. It's really quite amazing, the variety of foods they can prepare that are very healthy and also appealing to a wide range of children and teens.

there are a few schools going to privatized greener route for lunches, i saw a news story not too long ago... they are few and far between and this point, though.

my memories of what was served in elementary school: beef stew (favorite!), pizza, corn dogs, chili sticks, cole slaw, hamburgers, french fries, tater tots. i grew up in the 'ketchup is a vegetable' era

jr high was better: they had a salad bar and baked potato bar. i went througha phase where my lunch was a pepsi & a pack of reese's cups everyday b/c it cost 10 cents less than regular lunch...

Oh memories! I had really good experiences with public schools in the seventies and eighties.

We played Star Wars. I was like Princess Leia's sister, and darth Vader's cousin threw me face down on the asphalt. It looked like I had a plum on my head...big, round, bright purple. My mother had to take me to the hospital, but nothing was wrong except that it looked like I had a plum on my head.

I was good in math so I got to skip it to be a cafeteria worker. Extra chocolate milk on Fridays. I got to serve jello and salad. Hot stuff no, except I was good enough to do the green beans. One day too many adults were missing...I got to do the mashed potatoes. I was king of the world. Couldm't wipe the grin off my face as I ladled away!

Doesn't take much to excite you does it lrjohnson! Here folks is the key to the frugal lifestyle - we missed the 'simple pleasures' class. Who knew it was being handed out in the cafeteria???????? While math class was going on no less!

I, on the other hand, was in the school office answering the switchboard. Yeah - the really outdated kind with the cords that you plugged into sockets! Early Dark Ages technology even then for me whom went to school during the Late Jurrasic Period. Is 'whom' correct in that sentence? I dunno, I was listening in on the horn when the principal and the secretary were sweet talking! Having sex ed instead of grammar!

Eliminating TAG - well we are an 'advanced' society so they tell me. Advanced idiocy maybe! What beaner pulled this crap out of their hat and called it 'social conditioning'?? BLECK!!! Where is he/she - I wanna go kick their pansy arse! GOOD GRIEF!!

Greener lunches? No, no, no not for the future mindless worker bees - they must be fattened for slaughter. I mean, fattened for minimum wage, don't I?????

I couldn't stand the school lunches. I pretty much just ate the roll and drank the milk. we did not have things like hamburgers and hot dogs, much less things like soda or ice cream. I usually went hungry a lot! In elementary school, I took my lunch cause it was cheaper to take a sandwich! But of course, that was frowned on in junior high! You could not be ccol and carry a sandwich in a bag!

the lady was upset over a near collision on the playground??...ok, so take that skill out of the playground...better they learn about near collisions when they start to drive dontchathink??? ridiculous!

It was more dangerous for my son to walk the halls in middle school. He was small and got beat on by bigger kids (from nice families, too--not the stereotypes) just walking the halls. He got hit(often between the shoulder blades--I guess to see if he could remain on his feet?), pushed, stepped on at his locker, and probably a lot he kept to himself. I was more worried about him IN the school, than out of it.

JanH, those are exactly some of the reasons I homeschooled my kids. Egads! Children should not have to endure the gauntlet to get themselves educated.

Since my DIL is an educator, I appreciate what she does a lot. But it is a tough job these days in a lot of schools. I hope she always has a school district that appreciates taking care of both educators and kids. With my daughter, it was more verbal abuse. It made her cry and not want to go to school. I don't understand what is happening to the schools. Take out physical education and the energy goes elsewhere. And it appears that respect for teachers and one another is out the window. A schoolteacher friend who retired said the parents were worse than the kids and she got tired of dealing with them. My DIL works for a rural district that seems to have a great attitude with family and community.
