Unhappy U.S. Mail

This is vent. I recently went to Reno for a conference. I bought postcards and sent them to people with first class postage for postcards. I mailed them Tuesday, July 18. Do you know that it took over two weeks and a day for some of them to get back to Illinois? Is that totally ridiculous? Yet, stuff mailed in bulk rate seems to get places faster! The soonest anyone got a card was over a week. My friend who received one after the over two weeks noticed I had dated it. I didn't expect them to get there in a couple of days, but some took one week and another over two weeks and delivered to the same town?

Gov't cutbacks? Our local postal system was getting real slow, we notified our local post master and they finally decided they needed to hire more sorters and open more than one service windows at lunchtime.

I too work for the gov't so I know they are under a lot of pressure to keep overhead down. Retirees & departing employees aren't replaced. Those left behind are given added duties, but there are only so many hours in the day to accomplish it all.

Maybe Reno's post master needs to hear from the customers they serve.

I bet you are right. My husband has a friend who delivers mail locally and he said they would prefer to pay him overtime instead of hiring anyone new! Thanks for pointing that out to me.

I used to be under the impression that mail was a priority job, but I have since learned better. A friend of mine works for the p.o. They have 10 regular carriers on his route and 5 relief carriers. If more than a couple people call in sick, the mail sits. It seems to be the norm, rather than the exception, that the delivery of mail is more a convenience than a necessity.

Pretty frightening that our mail isn't a priority. But, we've gotten things late and I've always wondered. Especially when I have to rush to pay something because the bill was delivered two days before the due date.
