Many years ago a friend got me involved with a multlevel marketing group. (Now some MLM's are OK. I've spoken about finances at many a mlm conference and met lots of lovely people.)

Anyhow this mlm was a great idea but it didn't have a chance of working because the promoters were too greedy (read crooks). We were coming home from a meeting and one person was saying "this mlm has got to work I need the money."

The penny dropped for me! The reason we get caught up with or look at these preposterous scams is that we disconnect reason. Our desire for money lets us ignore the obvious flaws of what is on offer. We think something has to work because we need the money.

These days I'm lightning fast with the delete key and if anything seems too good to be true I ignore it.

DO people still fall for these? It really is incredible.

A similar scam I heard of took advantage of peoples perception of probability. An email is recieved stating that in next Saturdays derby game between Liverpool and Everton, Liverpool will win.

You shrug, discount it. That weekend, Liverpool win.

Right afterwards you get an email saying "See I told you. Next week Chealsea will lose to Man U"

You await the results that weekend. Chealsea indeed, do lose to Man U.

A third (forth? fifth?) email comes. See how right we are all the time? We can tell you how to do this and help you make millions in betting, All you need to do is send £1000 yadd yadd yadda.....

How does it work?

Thousands of emails are sent out; half stating Everton will win, half stating liverpool will win. Of the half the recipients who had the right result, half are sent another email predicting one side winning, the other half predicting the other result. And so on.

Out of the thousands of emails sent out initially, a small group of people (After 3 emails, 1/8th, 4 emails 1/16th etc) willl have had emails amazingly accurate for every game and willing to pay for the "secret". Have enough people in your mail shot and you get a few victims who give in and you get your cash.

Amazingly immoral but interesting how these things work.

Well, I know of a couple of co-workers that are in MLMs. They are both very intelligent and successful people, in my book.

Although I personally don't have much fondness for MLMs, I can accept that some of them are legitimate. They just get a bad reputation, being lumped together with ones that are out-right scams.

Some are simply based on networking and commission-based sales.

Some go beyond that and promise things that they can't deliver.
