I started reading this board a little over a month ago because my wife and I have quite a bit of debt. She has a lot of CCdebt and I have a lot of student loan debt. We currently live apart due to our jobs. I finally have taken complete control over our finances because we have struggled a lot with 2 rents, a 1 year old son, and the once a month plane tickets to see each other. After studying this board and our finances there is no reason for us to be struggling, we should be able to attack our debt. Again, thanks for the motivation!

Glad to help. If you want more specific help beyond the motivation, post details of your situation and we'd be happy to offer advice.

As of now, I am using the Dave Ramsey snowball plan. My wife and I want to see results, that is why we picked this plan. We are attacking our smallest debts first. If we need help, I will post some specific questions, but as of now, we are just trying to get out of this hole...one snowball at a time...

Dave Ramsey's method is good for immediate results with the smallest to largest debt snowball plan. The psychological effect of seeing debt being paid off will help motivate you. If you need any advice, feel free to ask here.

I do have a question, I want to start a blog on blogger to detail my journey to being debt free...is this a good idea or a bad idea? I obviously won't be giving any personal information other than my debt amounts...good or bad idea?

A blog can be cathartic but if it matters to you, then provide no personal information.
You can do it! I paid off $30,000 in debt in 1 year by sticking to my guns. Never again will I have debt. |

zim - Sorry but not posting links means not posting links, not skirting the rules to sneak one in. Hang around and keep participating in discussions and when you have enough posts, then you can post a link to your blog.
Good luck with your efforts to get debt free.

Feels good to know that the forum community is excellent and motivating - helping someone solve the issues practically.I do agree solving smaller debts gives you a positive feel for progressing ahead and helps in the long run as well.I think blog is good idea to share how you are working out your debts for someone in a similar situation as you are.I wish you clear your debts and enjoy family time sooner.

Why are you living apart with a kid? Is it worth it with two rents? Daycare I assume? Would it make financial sense for one person to quit, move and then find a job, saving on daycare in the process?

We both have excellent careers in college athletics. Actually, last summer I quit my job and moved to where she is, but could not find pay anywhere near what I was making. She lives in a very rural setting and after being there for about 4 months we were struggling (more than we are now) and I was given an opportunity to work in my field again in a very good situation. We made this decision for me to take this job becasue there is a lot more opportunity for her in the area I'm in, than there was for me where she is.

I 2nd or 3rd the Dave Ramsey snowball method. It might not be the "best" plan as far as avoiding interest payments, but it is the one most people will likely stick to because of the benefits of seeing the effects.
