First thing I would do is write a letter to whomever pays your checks. In your letter, explain the problem and ask for a written response. Be polite, and send the letter certified with return receipt requested.

You need to begin documenting the problem in case you do need to go to court.

If they do not respond in 30 days, you can probably take this to small claims court yourself. Explain it to the judge just like you explained it here, and bring any evidence you have, like paystubs.

It's not absolutely necessary to get lawyers involved for small amounts. Keep in mind, if your employer does not want to pay you $500, he is not likely to pay an attorney either.
